Problem-Based Learning to Empower Computer Science Engineers - Bennett University
In the 21st Century, Computer Science Engineering has proved to be the fastest growing field of engineering. The most sought-after concepts like machine learning, deep learning, data science, artificial intelligence, internet of things, big data, cloud computing, robotics, blockchain, etc have emerged through Computer Science Engineering.
Apoorva Mishra, Assistant Professor, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Bennett University writes on the importance of problem-based learning along with peer-to-peer brainstorming which is proven to be a key factor in the industry.
The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) released a report recently, which predicted that India’s IT sector may grow by 9% in the 2019-20 fiscal year. And according to McKinsey’s ‘Technology Jobs & the Future of Work’, digital technologies may contribute anywhere between $550 Billion up to $1 Trillion per year, of economic impact in India by the year 2025.
Only in a teaching pedagogy where problem-based learning (PBL) is implemented can students be exposed to the real world problems, which allows to come up with various solutions to the existing problems in the most innovative ways. This process of teaching improves problem-solving skills of the students, develops creativity and helps understand the concepts better.
They learn to deal with problems they wouldn’t otherwise learn in a common lecturing method of teaching. In the PBL, the learning process is in control of the students which is in stark contrast to the traditional approach where a professor imparts knowledge through lectures and gives them ways to solve the problem.
Information is more accessible to everyone in India than it was two decades ago because of the advent of the internet. As a result, teachers are no longer considered the only ‘knowledge providers’. The faculty in educational institutions are required to adopt new teaching strategies which focus on both the knowledge rendering and real-life application of the concepts as well as how to fulfill the needs of the society. It is the responsibility of the Institutes offering Computer Science and Engineering to continually change the syllabus and accept the latest technology in sync with the industry’s evolving demands.
