Setting the bar high for social and environmental sustainability in the fashion industry, students at the School of Fashion Technology of Lovely Professional University (LPU) are revolutionizing the fashion industry. Proving their mastery of finesses, craftsmanship and exquisite skills, students are not only stepping ahead with recycling processes but also providing new life to old textiles and discarded garments. LPU students either have their own entrepreneurial endeavors, start-ups or secured coveted placement with big brands and reputed designers.
- Design student, with an annual business of Rs 70 Lakhs, Benorita Dash is one of the illustrious examples of such hardworking LPU students. Her ‘Ladyben’ brand is a journey of utilizing the used materials. May it be a new home decor out of old used clothes, or a nice pair of shoes out or used Sari Fall, she aims zero waste generation and only novel creation. She is after a sustainable change in fashion. She shares: “I started the brand ‘Ladyben’ with zero investment. Now the brand is holding many Lakhs of turnover within a year. I am proud that I am ethically working on waste material”. MSc Fashion Technology student, Lalrinpari, who hails from North East, manufactures more than 3000 garments annually and has a business of 80 lakhs under brand POZ.
Similarly, with her own latest and innovatively appealing creations, LPU student Suman Handa has her start-up ‘Handa Design Studio’ with an annual turnover of Rs 5 Million, in initial stages. With 50 Lac package plus incentives, LPU student Aashima Sherwan is working for A|X Armani Exchange. Aashima shares, “The exposure at LPU provided me the actual situation of the fashion industry in the world.”
There are various other such success stories of current fashion students and alumni of Lovely Professional University. In 2019, Fashion students were provided next level exposure and experience at the elite Delhi Fashion Week as the platform. This was the first time that LPU students stepped out in the national market. Ritu Beri, Mandira Wirk, Charu Prashar, Ashfaque Ahmed, Subarna Ray, Ashima Leena and more, LPU students experimented with a maximum of creative designs, patterns, fabrics, and colors as their enthralling presentations to match their stature with national and international designers. Budding fashion designers presented their ensembles inspired through various themes. True representation of the personality and thought process of the designer concerned was the thought process of the theme. Mrs. Universe Euro-Asia Rashmi Sachdeva, Leading fashion stylist Harsh Khullar and many other national and international designers reached students’ stall also and appreciated their creativity.
Recently, fashion students got world-class industry exposure by visiting 34th Surajkund International Crafts Mela-2020, where superb craftsmen-women participated from 20 countries & all states of India. The iconic 15th year of Pride Fashion Tour, in collaboration with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), unveiled a new face of fashion for the students. On these lines, students also made Industry visits to Neva Garments Ltd and Versatile Enterprises at Ludhiana, Punjab. The purpose here was to explore Apparel Manufacturing Industry for knowing "Apparel Manufacturing Technology". Students grasped in-depth knowledge about various verticals related to Operations Management.
Talking individually, LPU student, Shaukeen Khan is currently working with Bollywood film industry’s famous costume designer- Ashley Rebello is an Indian costume designer and did designing & styling for superstar Salman Khan’s movies Dabang-3 and Radhe. Another LPU student, Vani Sharma is a buyer for home decor in the home box (Dubai Brand); LPU student Gunjan Sachdeva is working with India’s premier designer ‘Masaba’ as Delhi store Director. All of these innovatively creating students share that they had an amazing study journey at LPU. Exposure and study environ made them prosper in their careers. They feel that it is all due to the faculty members at the LPU Fashion department that they had a great experience of learning in the university and the industry.
