To abbreviate SSLC which is a general eligibility examination conducted in class 10th. Apart from that, it has significance in issuing important documents.
The full form of SSLC is the Secondary School Leaving Certificate. The school certificate is offered after the student successfully qualified for the examination at the secondary school level in India. The secondary level of schooling is commonly known as matriculation examinations or class 10th board examinations in India. The students can get the SSLC after completing their class 10 board examinations successfully. Schooling is classified into three types in India. They are:
- Primary Schooling: The first five formative years, i.e., from class 1st to class 5th of a child's education, is known as primary schooling.
- Secondary Schooling: This schooling for the next five years, from class 6th to class 10th, is secondary schooling.
- High School or Pre-University Course: The last two years of schooling after completion of primary and secondary education, i.e., from class 11th to class 12th, is known as the Pre-University courses. After that, a student can pursue a course of his/her choice.

Importance of SSLC
While registration of birth and death is not mandatory in India, the SSLC certificate serves as the primary verification document for date of birth. According to the Ministry of External Affairs website, for those born before 1989, it is still a legal form of verification of date of birth for the Indian civil authorities to issue civil documents such as passports. SSLC is famous for its general eligibility examination and in many states in India, particularly Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
What's Next After SSLC?
On obtaining this certificate, the student is said to have finished his primary schooling or primary education. After completing SSLC, there are different types of courses available, from which one can be selected. The different combo of courses available are :
- Biology stream: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
- Computer Science stream: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science
- Commerce stream: Business Maths, Economics, etc.
After qualifying for class 10th examinations, a student gains enough knowledge to choose a stream that best suits their future. The student then joins PUC or Pre-University Course for two years. After successful completion of two years, a student enters a University for undergraduate studies.
Alternatively, after getting the SSLC, a student has the option of joining polytechnic for a three-year course of diploma in engineering and then further joining as a lateral entry to pursue Engineering. There is also an option of joining vocational education courses.

SSLC In Kerala
SSLC or class 10th exam is conducted by the KSEB (Kerala State Education Board) for all its affiliated schools and grants the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) to the students who qualify. The exam is conducted in the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology, Social Sciences, First Language (English, Malayalam, etc.), Second Language, and Third Language (Hindi, GK). Exams are conducted in March, and results are announced in May.
SSLC In Karnataka
KSEEB (Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board), which traces its origin to 1964, is responsible for conducting SSLC and other Karnataka examinations. Around 8-9 lakh students appear every year for the KSEEB SSLC exam, which is generally conducted in April. The results will be declared in July.
SSLC In Tamil Nadu
The Directorate of Government Examinations was established in 1975, whose primary responsibility was conducting the Board examinations for the students of class 10th and 12th. In 2011, the State Board of School Examinations was established by merging the Board of Secondary Education and Board of Higher Secondary Examinations to conduct SSLC exams. Approximately 9 to 10 lakh students appear for Tamil Nadu SSLC Public Examination every year. The Board will show the exam in March/April.
