The plea is to relax the 75 per cent eligibility criteria for JEE aspirants. Last year the NTA removed the 75 per cent criteria for JEE Main candidates, considering the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the authorities revised the eligibility criteria to set that the candidates must have scored a minimum of 75 per cent marks or are in the top 20 percentile for their Class 12th Result can apply for the exam.
Students and Advocate Anubha Sahai are challenging this decision by the exam conducting body. They assert that the class 12 marks are not enough to judge the candidate's calibre and potential to crack the JEE Main exam. The petition filed by the petitioners says that marks scored by the student are not a true reflection of their actual ability. Hence, those students with less marks than the JEE Main 2023 Eligibility Criteria (75%) for this year's examinations can score very high marks in the upcoming JEE Main 2023. Therefore a fair chance is denied to them will affect the future of lakhs of bright students.
