CLAT 2023 Exam: Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2023 will be held on December 18, 2022.
CLAT will provide admission to 22 National Law Universities for 5-year LLB and LLM programmes for the academic year 2023-24.
The last date to apply for CLAT 2023 is November 13, 2022. Candidates with at least 45% or its equivalent in the Class 12 exams will be eligible to apply for the exam. However, SC and ST candidates must have at least 40% marks or equivalent grades to be eligible to take CLAT 2023.
CLAT 2023: Syllabus
CLAT syllabus 2023 comprises of the below mentioned subjects.
- English Language
- Current Affairs (Including General Knowledge)

CLAT English Language Syllabus 2023
The English language section of CLAT exam is designed to test the candidate’s reading ability. Candidates will have to attempt 4 to 5 comprehension passages of 450 words each, the contents of which will be derived from fiction and non-fiction writing from contemporary and historical sources. Following the passages, 4 to 5 objective-type questions will be asked that will test the following skills of the candidate. CLAT detailed syllabus for the English language includes the following.
- Understanding of the main point discussed, along with the arguments and viewpoints discussed in the passages.
- Draw conclusions and inferences based on the contents of the passages.
- Draw a summary of the passages.
- Identify, compare, and contrast the different arguments or viewpoints given in the passages.
- Vocabulary
- Understanding of Phrases.
CLAT Current Affairs Syllabus 2023 (Including General Knowledge)
This section will test the candidate’s knowledge in current affairs, as well as the candidate’s general knowledge. Like the English Language section, this section will also have 450-word comprehension passages. This section will also have objective questions following each passage.
The Current Affairs section will have around 35 and 39 questions, which makes up for 25% of the paper. Candidates will have to read up on the following topics to stay on top of their preparation for this section.

CLAT Legal Reasoning Syllabus 2023
The Legal Reasoning section will also have 4 to 5 comprehension passages of about 450 words each. Like the Current Affairs section, this section will also make up for 25% of the overall questions asked in the paper. The contents of the passages may be drawn from various factual scenarios or events involving legal matters and questions, public policy questions, and moral philosophical inquiries.
For this section, candidates must have some prior knowledge or understanding of the law. A basic understanding or awareness of legal and moral issues will help attempt this section. The questions that may be asked will revolve around the following themes.
- Identify the rules and principles mentioned in the passage and draw an inference
- Use the rules and principles in the passage to factual situations
- Understand how a change in the rules and principles can alter the applications of the same to factual situations
CLAT Logical Reasoning Syllabus 2023
The Logical Reasoning section is designed to test the critical and analytical thinking abilities of the candidate. This section will have between 28 and 32 objective-type questions that will require the candidate to demonstrate the following.
- Being able to recognize arguments, the premise of the arguments, and concluding.
- Being able to critically examine the pattern of reasoning, and draw conclusions based on assessing evidence and premises.
- Drawing an inference from reading the passages and applying the same to new situations.
- Assessing the effectiveness of the arguments, drawing relationships and analogies, and identifying contradictions and equivalence.
CLAT Quantitative Ability Syllabus 2023
The Quantitative Ability section will have questions that will be asked from Class X Mathematics. Most questions from this section will be asked from short sets, facts or propositions, graphs or text, and pictorial or diagrammatic representations of numerical formations. Using the information derived from the facts, diagrams, passages, graphs, and other representations, candidates will have to apply Mathematical formulas and operations while answering the questions.
This section will have between 13 and 17 questions. Candidates will have to study the following topics closely.
- Ratios and Proportions
- Basic Algebra
- Mensuration and Statistical Estimation
- Percentage
- Profit and Loss
