PM Modi Launches YUVA 2.0 Mentoring Scheme for Budding Authors: Was the First Edition a Success?

The Ministry of Education has launched the second edition of the Prime Minister’s YUVA 2.0 scheme to mentor budding young writers and build a country-wide culture of reading and writing. YUVA 2.0 is the second edition of the original YUVA (Young, Upcoming and Versatile Authors) scheme. Originally the PM’s YUVA scheme was initiated in 2021 in order to empower the youth and create a learning ecosystem to prepare young writers for leadership roles in the future.

Similarly, this year, the PM’s YUVA 2.0 scheme aims to provide mentorship and guidance to budding writers below the age of 30. Under this scheme, a total of 75 authors will be selected through an All India Contest, hosted by the National Book Trust under the Ministry of Education. 

The applicants will be asked to submit a book proposal of 10,000 words by Nov 30, 2022. A committee will evaluate the proposals received from the contestants from Dec 1, 2022 to Jan 31, 2023. The list of names of the selected authors will be announced by the last week of February 2023, and the mentorship program will begin on Mar 1, 2023. The mentorship program will take place over a duration of 6 months. Finally, the publication of the selected books will begin on Oct 2, 2023.

The intention of creating this scheme was to allow the monumental youth population of India the unprecedented opportunity to present their literary skills on a global platform under the mentorship of the editorial staff of the National Book Trust. The central government's objective was to transform authorship into a profession as coveted as any. 

This scheme was intentionally initiated around the 75th year of Indian independence to allow writers to author books focusing on the unsung heroes of India's rich past and bring out new political, cultural and economic perspectives of the national independence movement. 

PM’s YUVA 1.0 Scheme: A Successful Venture?

With the implementation of the second edition of the YUVA scheme, many wonder if the first edition of the same was a booming success. The success of the PM’s YUVA 1.0 scheme can be measured by the number of young authors who are provided with the rare opportunity to express themselves through the medium of their books and project India on a global literary platform. 

As many as 75 authors were selected last year through the All India Contest, after which they went through rigorous mentorship over the course of 6 months and received editorial support and guidance from eminent authors. At the end of the mentorship, each writer received INR 3,00,000 in the form of a consolidated scholarship. In addition, their books were published by the National Trust of India, and a royalty of 10% was payable to all authors on the successful publication of their books. 

This scheme even allowed all the published books to be translated into other Indian languages in order to allow a wider audience to access these books without any cultural limitations. India is the 3rd largest publisher of books in the world, so initiatives like such will not only direct young authors to transform into better leaders but will also pave the way for the growth of our country. Undoubtedly, this scheme will provide the necessary boost to the new generation of authors to pursue their literary dreams.
