NCERT Panel Recommends School Textbook Publishers to Replace India With Bharat
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has recommended the school textbook publishers to replace India with Bharat.
NCERT Recommends Altering India to Bharat in School Books: Prof CI Issac, Chairman of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), hopes that from next year, all the school textbooks will replace the country's name as Bharat instead of India.
The 2022 Social Science Committee of NCERT has suggested that 'India should be called as Bharat'. Amidst the ongoing debate on changing the country's name, NCERT is yet to take a final call on the same.
NCERT Recommended Altering India to Bharat in School Books shortly after the conclusion of the G20 Summit in which the President was quoted as President of Bharat instead of President of India ever since there have been speculations regarding changing the name of the nation from India to Bharat.
Bharatiya Janata Party's leader, Tarun Chugh, has welcomed the decision of NCERT by stating that 'Bharat' is in our DNA. He further stated that the country's name has been Bharat for centuries, and the British called it India. Also, Tarun Chugh condemned the remarks made by the Congress party and also asked what is the problem in renaming the country to its initial name.
On the other hand, the opposition leaders are of the opinion that changing the name will lead to confusion for students across classes. This recommendation will be welcomed only if the entire country accepts to rename India to Bharat in all the official documents. Changing a country's name is a tedious process, and the Government must carefully analyse all the pros and cons of the possible outcome.
Meanwhile, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) on Oct 25th stated, "it is too premature to comment" on the reports in sections of Media concerning changing the name of the country from India to Bharat. Anyhow, one must wait for NCERT to give an official notice regarding the same.
