The students protested against the NEET PG exam as they didn’t get enough time to prepare for the exam. Some of them were not eligible to apply for the exam as they could not complete their internships on time due to Covid. Even though the Indian Medical Association (IMA) wrote a letter to Union Health Minister to postpone the exam, still the Supreme Court rejected their demands. It declared the verdict – not to change the exam date.
The bench of Justices, including DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant, stated that more than 2 lakh doctors had registered for the exam, and any changes to the exam date would create chaos, uncertainty, and deficiency of doctors in hospitals. Moreover, the NTA cannot grant the reliefs sought in these proceedings. Petitions were, therefore, dismissed.
Some Doctors Oppose The Deferment of the Exam
Some doctors did not want the NEET PG exam postponed as they believe the exam and other proceedings should happen at the allocated time so that the succeeding academic schedule is not hampered like last year.
- Due to the gap in the schedule last year, hospitals saw a shortage of resident doctors.
- Doctors also believe that Covid uncertainty is here to stay. Nobody can predict a lockdown or surge in cases now. They suggest that it is time to reconcile the academic schedule.
- Despite the instructions that no candidate can apply after seat allotment, many applicants allotted seats after the 2nd counselling round still applied for the mop-up round.
- Students had enough time for 1 year to prepare for the exams, so making excuses about not getting adequate time is just a poor excuse.
Furthermore, students who are appearing for the exam tomorrow are advised to practice last year’s question papers, do a revision of important topics and remain positive.
