Strategies to Help India Become a Universal Higher Education Hub
India is ranked 3 in having the highest education system globally. However, several factors inhibit Indian colleges and universities from being counted among the top-notch global research institutes.
India has one of the largest higher education systems in the world, with over 40 million students enrolled in around 1000+ universities and 42,000+ colleges. Graduates from India's top institutes are recognized globally. .
According to the Global Employability University Ranking and Survey (GEURS) report by Times Higher Education, the overall ranking for different Indian Institutes has improved, with IIT Delhi at 29th position in the ranking. Furthermore, IISc Bangalore and IIT Bombay secured 58th and 72nd ranks, respectively. Overall, with only 7 institutes in the top 250 rankings, India holds the 13th spot in having the best higher education institutes globally.
However, India's research institutes have several loopholes that hold them back from featuring among the best institutes globally. The existing higher education system faces several structural and operational difficulties, including low public spending, a lack of student funding, inadequate faculty skill levels, and others. With the introduction of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), the Indian education system aims to encourage industrial ties with institutions, enabling them to offer consulting and research services to strengthen the industry and research focus. NEP 2020 intends to enrol 34 million more students in the Indian higher education system by 2035, with the goal of obtaining a target gross enrollment ratio of 50%.
