UGC’s Proposal to Merge NEET and JEE into CUET: Details Here
The new NEET JEE CUET Merger proposed by the UGC will be a game changer for higher education aspirants in the country.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) will likely implement a proposal to merge the entrance exams for medical and engineering with the standard university entrance exam in the country. Specifically, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-Undergraduate as well as the Joint Entrance Exam (Mains) JEE will now get integrated with the Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG.) According to UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar, the new UGC proposal aims to combine mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology into a single entrance exam. This way, aspirants for higher studies can explore different fields based on their exam marks.

Main Objectives Behind the NEET JEE CUET Merger
According to the UGC chairperson, the new UGC mandate aims to alleviate the stress on students undertaking multiple entrance exams. Thus, those preparing for JEE study physics, chemistry and mathematics, while aspirants for NEET study physics, chemistry, and biology. On the other hand, candidates aspiring for neither of the streams above undertake general education. However, with the new NEET-CUET-JEE merger, candidates can opt for a stream from a single exam, depending on their performance. That way, they will be eligible for different career options based on a single entrance exam. Consequently, they would only need to write an entrance exam once.
Furthermore, UGC also eases streamlining the logistical computing constraints that National Testing Agency (NTA) faces yearly. Conducting multiple exams in different sessions takes a toll on NTA’s facilities. Moreover, students must travel long distances to the exam centre if they fail to get a centre within their city. However, with fewer exams conducted due to UGC’s new mandate, all these entrance exam problems may be resolved soon.
Concluding Remarks
UGC is in talks with its stakeholders to conduct its “single entrance” examination model at least twice a year, according to Kumar. Moreover, there are plans to set up dedicated exam centres across India for the exam. This new UGC proposal will be a game changer for the nearly 43 lakh aspirants in India who appear in various entrance exams to pursue higher education.
