The West Bengal government has allowed schools to reopen for classes 8 to 12 from 3 February as the COVID-19 cases decrease in the state. In a press conference on Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said colleges, universities, and polytechnic institutes would reopen. “We will decide on reopening primary schools later,” she said. Banerjee said the COVID-19 situation in the state had improved a lot, and thus the government has given certain relaxation.
West Bengal schools remained closed until 31 January 2022, as the government extended the COVID restrictions in the state to the end of the month. Also, the administration of all educational institutions was functioning with half of the staff capacity. Order from West Bengal said, “All educational institutions including schools, colleges and universities in the state will remain shut until 31 January. Only administrative activities are allowed in educational institutions with 50 per cent staff members at a time”. The state government had shut all educational institutions because of the surge in COVID cases across the state. The government had permitted all other offices to function with a 50 per cent workforce.
