Professor Debashish Haldar and Tanmay Das from the Department of Chemical Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science and Educational Research(IISER) Kolkata have synthesized a new compound that can effectively remove metal ions and reduce fluoride content in drinking water.
This chemical compound (Meisenheimer complex) is a combination of two compounds, picric acid and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. It effectively and quickly reduces the concentration of metal ions and fluoride ions in drinking water to well below WHO limits. This compound can also be used to absorb a variety of oils and organic solvents from the water. This property makes it useful in treating oil spills.
