NIEPMD, established in the year 2005, is an Indian government agency providing services to persons with multiple disabilities. The institute offers multiple courses such as C.C.C.G, BPT, BOT, BPO, BASLP, D.Ed - Special Education, B.Ed - Special Education, M.Ed- Special Education, PG Diploma and M.Phil. Admission to various courses is done based on merit or an entrance examination like NEET/CET/ NET.

National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities was established by the Government of India under the aegis of the Department of Disability Affairs within the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in Chennai. It runs HRD programs to train rehabilitation professionals.

NIEPMD Departments

NIEPMD offers undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma programs. Every department is designed for one or two streams and offers courses and programs in those fields. The departments of NIEPMD are listed below.

NIEPMD Admission

NIEPMD has closed admissions for all offered courses for the academic year 2022-23. Admission to Certificate courses, PG Diplomas, D.Ed B.Ed and M.Ed are done based on merit.Candidates for BPT and BOT have to give the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education Tamil Nadu. For B.ASLP candidates have to appear for the NEET entrance exam. 

NIEPMD Eligibility Criteria

NIEPMD offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses with different eligibility criteria. A list of a few courses offered by the university with their eligibility criteria is given below.

B.Ed Special education Eligibility Criteria

• Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree with 50%.

BASLP  Eligibility Criteria

• Candidates must pass  10+2 with PCB/Mathematics/Computer Science/Statistics/Electronics/ Psychology and with 50% marks.
• Candidates must have a valid NEET score.

BPT  Eligibility Criteria

•  Candidates must pass  10+2 with PCB Botany and Zoology.
• Candidates must have a valid CET score.

National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (Divyangjan) was established in the year 2005, Under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India, to serve as a national resource centre for empowerment of persons with Multiple Disabilities such as those with two or more disabilities in a person.

NIEPMD Academic Advantages

• NIEPMD aspires to promote and conduct research in all areas relating to Multiple Disabilities and to develop trans-disciplinary models and strategies for social rehabilitation to meet the needs of diverse groups of people with Multiple Disabilities, by the society hereinafter referred to as “the Institute” or through NGOs.
• It also aims to conduct, sponsor, coordinate or subsidize research into all aspects of the education, rehabilitation, capacity building, and independent living of persons with Multiple Disabilities by the institute or through NGOs.
• To manufacture, fabricate, adapt or promote or subsidize the manufacture of prototypes and distribution of any or all aids designed to promote any aspects of the education, therapy and rehabilitation of the persons with Multiple Disabilities.

NIEPMD Scholarships

NIEPMD offers scholarships to economically weaker sections of students. Different types of scholarships and other welfare schemes are also made available for NIEPMD students. Some of these are mentioned below

• SC/ST students studying the HRD programs under NIEPMD are offered scholarships or freeships from their respective state governments.

• NIEPMD gives “Disability awards” for PH/MR/VI/HH/MD category students pursuing HRD courses

• Scholarships are also provided under central sector scholarship for promoting quality education among SC candidates.

• Educational loans from nationalized banks and NHFDC are arranged for students with disabilities
