Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun was established in the year 1982. In the year 1986, the institute was granted as autonomous. On 29th July 2019, The National Tiger Conservation Authority, Wildlife Institute of India and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India, celebrated the International Tiger Day at the residence of the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India.
