Engineering Fee Structure Revised as AICTE Fixes Fee Slab for Private Institutes
The AICTE recently announced fixed fee slabs for India's private educational institutes. The brackets & more details are given below.
Taking action against the growing problem of commercialization of technical education in India, the AICTE has decided on a fixed fee slab for private institutes. Retired Supreme Court judge Justice Srikrishna heads the committee that has proposed the specified brackets. The field of education differentiates the bracket ranges.
Furthermore, the orders state that a UG private engineering institute’s annual minimum fee must fall between INR 79,600 and 1,89,000 per annum. Meanwhile, for the two-year PG programs, the bracket is between INR 1,41,000 and 3,04,000 per annum.
An AICTE report published in 2015 stated that the maximum cost for UG four-year engineering program is INR 1.44 lakh to INR 1.58 lakh annually. Now, the committee has also proposed a lower limit. The council stated that institutions could impose development fees up to 15% of the tuition fees. Albeit, these rules apply only to those colleges run by the AICTE. The IITs and IIMs are not in consideration for such rules.

SC, ST, EWS Benefits
Besides revising the fee slab, the AICTE has also asked to provide scholarships for SC, ST, and historically-marginalized communities. The committee has advised the state governments to reimburse the institutions. However, the government can reimburse the institutes following the verification within three months of submitting the scholarship forms.
