The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has hiked the fees for all the postgraduate and PhD programs. Check details here.
IIT Bombay: IIT Bombay has hiked the fees of all the postgraduate and PhD programs. Thus, students started a hunger strike against the fee hike. However, a day after the students began their hunger strike against the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay’s decision to hike fees, the institute released a statement defending the move. The institute said it needed to adjust its charges to stay alive and grow. IIT Bombay said they only receive eight percent of the funds from the student’s fees. It also added that the operational expenses would continue to be more than the fees collected despite the fee hike.
Officials had approved the fee hike in 2020. However, they kept it in abeyance due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Later, when the authorities proposed a 35 percent fee hike in postgraduate programs, the issue re-emerged in July 2022. Students, however, began the protest against the hike, naming it extremely inconsiderate of students.
The hike in hostel fees from INR 2000 to INR 2700 is a significant point of contention between IIT Bombay authorities and students. However, the institute has defended the move saying that since there is an increase in students, the institute needs to build more hostels and academic buildings.

Students have been protesting, demanding the immediate rollback of the fee hike. This revocation recommends a 5 percent annual fee hike and the inclusion of student representatives in the standing committee for student fee matters. Additionally, the institute has hiked the tuition fees for new PhD students from INR 2500 to INR 5000. For new MTech students, tuition fees rose from INR 5000 per semester (after a partial tuition fee waiver) to INR 30000 per semester.
