IIT Roorkee Celebrates 175 Years with an Alumni Outreach Event
The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee sponsored an alumni outreach event on July 17 in Kolkata, for 175th-anniversary festivities.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee sponsored an alumni outreach event on July 17 in Kolkata, West Bengal, as part of its 175th-anniversary festivities. IIT Roorkee, originally Thomason College of Engineering and University of Roorkee, is Asia’s oldest technological college. An official statement stated that the celebrations for its 175th anniversary (1847-2022) began on November 25, 2021, and would continue until November 24, 2022. Throughout the year of celebrations, the institute has scheduled a variety of academic, cultural, athletic, and outreach activities for students, professors, staff, and alumni. According to IIT Roorkee, more than 200 alumni of the institute attended the outreach event on Sunday with their families.
“This event was attended by retired academic members from IIT Roorkee who live in Kolkata.” IIT Roorkee undertook zonal outreach activities for the third time in a row, following Ahmedabad (West) and Kathmandu (Nepal), to facilitate alumni reunions to reach out to all graduates and celebrate their successes, as well as enhance reminiscence and cohesive bonding. Furthermore, IIT Roorkee is working to celebrate 175 years of achievement in additional cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, and Delhi,” an official statement added.
“Padmashri Shri Harshavardhan Neotia, Chairman of Ambuja Neotia Group, honoured the ceremony with his presence.” Other dignitaries present included Shri Manoj Pant, Principal Secretary and Finance Secretary West Bengal at the West Bengal Government. Prof. Manoranjan Parida, Deputy Director IIT Roorkee, Prof. Partha Roy, Dean of Resources & Alumni Affairs IIT Roorkee, Prof. Arun Kumar, IIT Roorkee, and Mr Santosh Kumar, CEO of IIT Roorkee Development Foundation also spoke at the occasion,” it said.
Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director of IIT Roorkee, addressed the ceremony, saying, “In our 175th year, this is the third outreach engagement focused on establishing the value of a close-knit affiliation among students, alumni, and faculty.” Teachers and seniors who came before us set the route for today’s minds to reach the pinnacle throughout history. The event’s goal is to create a space for all graduates in the network to connect with their alma mater and fellow alumni, both senior and junior to them.”
