The Union Health Ministry reports that as of 2014, India had just 387 medical colleges. There were far too many issues with the system. In 2022, there will be 96,077 seats for UG medical students, up from 51,348 in 2014. The number of PG seats also increased, going from 31,185 to 63,842.
Despite an unprecedented increase in the number of UG and PG medical seats, the colleges are experiencing a teacher shortage, harming medical students' training.
The government database now includes 261 different colleges. Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), initiatives for the upgradation of 75 government medical institutions and 22 new AIIMS were undertaken. There are currently 2,037 MBBS seats in 19 of the 22 new AIIMS for NEET Admission 2022 that have begun offering MBBS (UG) sessions. Government medical colleges reported a 96% increase since 2014, while private medical colleges reported a 46% increase.
96,077 UG medical seats will be available by 2022, up from 51,348 in 2014. Although the number of seats is growing, there needs to be more professors to instruct the students adequately.
