UGC awaits feedback on the latest regulations draft concerning granting autonomous status to colleges. Read details regarding the latest developments made by UGC here.
UGC: The University Grants Commission has published a notification wherein they welcome suggestions for the draft regulations to grant colleges autonomy. As a result, UGC has accepted the altered guidelines to present autonomy to affiliated and constituent colleges of universities. The higher education regulator has published the regulation draft on the official website. Previously, UGC suggested changes in the regulations in 2018 to encourage the title of autonomy to advocate varied educational quality and distinction. Likewise, these regulations allow the freedom to exercise their course of study, syllabi, structure and design the program per the college's understanding. In turn, making these institutes more in line with local needs, introducing several skills and more aligned with the job requisites. Moreover, these colleges get the liberty to draw their admission regulations, examination methods and result notification system.
However, UGC will grant the autonomous label for 10 years. As sources at UGC, they have highlighted that since the country is going through a major shift in the education sector after the introduction of the National Education Policy 2020, UGC has transformed the rules parallel to the recommendations of NEP 2020. UGC is currently seeking to evaluate the new draft regulations by October 25.

Who Will Be Granted the Autonomous Status?
Colleges must note that the autonomous title is not to be given away just like that but comes with a few criteria. Let us walk through these requirements below.
- Colleges must be established at least 10 years ago with accreditation from NAAC with a minimum A grade or by NBA for a minimum of three courses which score atleast 675 individually or a similar accreditation grade/score from a UGC-led accreditation agency.
- Although in case the college runs less than three programs, they must atleast hold a score of 675 per course as per UGC requirements. Similarly, accreditation must be valid for one year before applying for autonomy.
- A college which meets all the eligibility criteria can apply for autonomous status online anytime in the year. The applications will be further reviewed within 30 days, and the application college will provide feedback on the status.
- Additionally, colleges must respond to UGC's recommendations within 30 days, or UGC will imply that the college has no objection to the ruling of UGC.
- A standing committee will decide if the applicant colleges should or should not be granted the autonomous title.
- However, if the autonomous status is rejected, the college van again applies for autonomous status in another 1 year.
- Lastly, an autonomous college can merge with another autonomous college if the parent university remains the same.
