All students aspiring to participate in the International Science Olympiads must appear in the first stage examination, the National Standard Examination (NSE) in the respective subject.

National Standard Examination
IAPT conducts NSE or National Standard Examination in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, and Junior Science, which is the first stage for the HBCSE International Science Olympiad.
All further stages are conducted by Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE), Mumbai. After the NSE examination, the next step for the eligible students is the Indian National Olympiad (INO) examination in the respective subjects. The Science Olympiad program follows a five-stage procedure.
For the first stage of the NSE examination, the candidates who have represented India in the International Olympiad on a previous occasion (IOAA, IBO, IChO, IJSO, and IPhO) in the respective subject need not appear. For the 1st stage NSEP and NSEA Examinations, the candidates who have represented India in the Asian Physics Olympiad (APhA) and the International Astronomy Olympiad Junior (IAO-Jr) respectively need not appear.
Eligibility Criteria for NSE
Here are the eligibility criteria for NSE:
- Must be eligible to hold an Indian passport.
- Date of birth between Jul 1, 2001, and June 30, 2006, both days inclusive.
- The participant must be an Indian resident.
- Participants must be a student of an Indian school system since Nov 30, 2018, or earlier.
- The candidate should not have passed (or scheduled to complete) the class XII board examination or equivalent earlier than Nov 30, 2020.
- Must not be appearing for NSEJS 2024.
NSE Registration
Students can follow the modes given below to register for the National Standard Examination.
Enrollment at a student's own school/college: If a school or college is a registered NSE center a student can enroll for NSE through his/her own institution (see below for registration of NSE centers). The principal/co-ordination teacher would be the contact person for this process.
Enrollment at a different school/college: If a student’s own institution is not a registered NSE center, it is still possible to participate in NSE by registering at a nearby center. The list of registration centers will be available on the IAPT website and also on this website a month before the exam date.
Enrollment fees: Rs. 150/- per student per subject to be paid to the center in-charge of the NSE registration center.
All students who have applied from states other than the state of their school should send the scanned copy of the NSE admit card and the school ID by email to iapt.nse@gmail.com before the exam date either they will be disqualified.
NSE center registration: Any school/college which is recognized by the state, is eligible to become an NSE center with a minimum enrolment of 20 students, subject to approval by Chief Coordinator, IAPT Examinations.
