NCERT awards scholarships to students who clear all the rounds at NTSE and are part of the final merit list. Students are awarded the NTSE scholarship until Ph.D. for students studying science, social sciences, humanities, language, commerce, vocational studies, and fine arts.

What is the NTSE Scholarship?
The National Talent Search Examination is specifically designed for the students of the 10th standard by NCERT to distribute scholarships to students for further studies. A rank holder in the NTSE examination gets scholarships for their 11th,12th, graduation, post-graduation, and Ph.D. programmes. This exam is one of the significant initiatives by the government of India to encourage students towards studies.

NTSE Scholarship Amount
An NTSE Scholar gets complete monetary support from the central government for their studies throughout their life.

NTSE Scholarship Eligibility
If a student wants to apply for an NTSE scholarship, they must fulfil the basic criteria to get an NTSE scholarship.
Basic NTSE scholarship eligibility is given below.
- Students must be studying by the 10th standard.
- The school of the student must be affiliated with any Indian-recognized board.
- The student must clear the minimum marks criteria in their 9th standard. Students from general and OBC must have 60% aggregate marks, whereas students belonging to SC, ST, and PWD need to have 55%marks in the 9th standard.
- The participant must be an Indian citizen.
- Participants must not be more than 18 years.
The student must complete all these eligibility criteria to sit in the NTSE examination. Students have to clear stage 1 (State level examination) to appear for stage 2 (National level examination). Rank holders of stage 2 will be awarded NTSE scholarships.
Rules to Avail the NTSE Scholarship Throughout Studies
After getting the NTSE scholarship in the 10th standard, if a student wants to keep having a scholarship amount, they must fulfil a few conditions.
Conditions to continue the NTSE scholarship for further studies are given below.
- For continuing the scholarship in the 11th and 12th standards, students must be promoted from their previous class with a minimum of 60% marks. The students preparing for exams like IIT, JEE, etc., will get a scholarship only after clearing the exam.
- Students in graduation and post-graduation will get scholarships only if they can maintain 60% aggregate marks every year.
- Students pursuing a Ph.D. will also receive scholarships from NTSE based on their marks in graduation and post-graduation.
- Suppose no institution or school does not conduct examinations annually. Then the institution must provide a certificate to the student related to their performance.
Note: No scholarship will be provided if a student fails to score 60% marks for more than one year. If a student fails to score 60% marks for one year, they won't get a scholarship for that year only.
Eligibility to Get NTSE Scholarship for 11th and 12th Standard
Eligibility and other conditions for the continuation of scholarship at the higher secondary stage are mentioned below.
- The scholarship shall be awarded only after clear promotion to class XI.
- SScholarshipsfor education levels equivalent to class XI and XII are payable for a maximum of two years.
- A student pursuing diploma or certificate courses will only be provided scholarships if they do not receive any other salary/stipend.
- Students can avail of the scholarship by submitting a certification from the institution's head for institutions that do not conduct an exam at the end of class XI.
- For students studying in institutions that report performance in terms of grades, a grade equivalent of 60% is accepted.
Eligibility to Get NTSE Scholarship at the Graduation Level
If a student wants to get the NTSE scholarship for their graduate-level studies, they have to fulfil some conditions to avail of the scholarship.
Requirements to avail scholarships for graduation level are given below.
- Students should have scored at least 60% of marks in aggregate at the internal examinations.
- However, the scholarship to MBBS candidates for the internship will only be given if one secures 60% or more marks in the final degree.
- If the institution/university does not conduct examinations annually, a certificate from the institution's principal/head explaining that the student's performance for the last semester is 60% or above.
- For institutions that follow the semester-based examinations, the marks or an equivalent CGPA at the end of an academic year must be greater than 60%.
Eligibility to Get NTSE Scholarship in Second-Degree Level Courses
If students want to apply for further studies, they can have a scholarship for their post-graduation studies.
Students must clear some eligibility criteria to get the scholarship for their post-graduation.
- If exams in an institution are conducted using the semester system, the marks, grades, or CGPA scored by the awardee in the examination conducted at the end of an academic year will be considered for a scholarship.
- Scholarships will also be available for awardees pursuing a diploma course in management or a specific medical branch if they qualify for such courses.
Eligibility to Get NTSE Scholarship at M.Phil./Ph.D.Stage
Interested students can also receive scholarships during their M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes.
Criteria to avail of the NTSE scholarships are given below.
- An awardee shall be eligible to receive a scholarship during the predoctoral/M.Phil.
- An awardee who is pursuing Ph.D./D.Phil., through research work, is eligible for a scholarship if they pass the previous degree on the first attempt with at least 60% marks after aggregating the grades for all the course years.
- The awardee must send the date of joining to NCERT and a certificate indicating the field of work from the awardee's supervisor. They should join/start research/predoctoral work within six months of the declaration of M.A./M.Com./M.Sc. Results.
- Two independent experts will assess the work done by the awardee at the end of two years. The scholarship shall be awarded for the next two years only if they find the work satisfying.
- Scholarship to an awardee who is pursuing a Ph.D.s given for a maximum of four years.
NTSE Scholarship Quota
The scholarship amount offered to NTSE scholars may reach up to INR 2,000 per month based on their level of study.

Leave Rules Applicable to Scholarships
Students must get permission from the head of the institution/department for any leave. Leaving without sanction might lead to the discontinuation of the scholarship. Generally, only medical leave will be granted. Students can avail of medical leave for a maximum of four months if the request is accompanied by a similar recommendation from a competent medical authority.
The rules are given below.
- Students will get a full scholarship if they have taken leave for less than two months.
- Students will get a half scholarship if they have taken leave for more than two months but less than four months.
- Students will not be given a scholarship, and it cannot be revived if the student takes a leave of more than four months.
- Scholarships for married men/women will be applicable at full rates of up to 15/135 days, respectively, if the leave is requested on the grounds of maternity.
- Ph.D. supervisors can grant a casual leave of a maximum of 30 days in an academic year to awardees working at the Ph.D. level.
- Medical leave, including maternity leave, must be informed to NCERT within a fortnight of the illness/confinements.
NTSE Mode of Fee Payment
The awardees will pay scholarships directly through net banking and bank draft, where net banking facilities are not available. The scholarship amount will be paid once NCERT receives the claim in the prescribed format duly signed by the institution's principal/head along with the mark sheet of the previous annual examination.
NCERT will send the scholarship amount (depending on the claim) on an annual basis. The payment will be from July to June (for manually) and from April to March (online) for an academic session. Relevant leave rules will apply for payment of scholarship during the leave.
