About IB
The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is the Ministry of Home Affairs’ domestic internal security and counter-intelligence department. It was established in 1887 as the Central Special Branch and is widely regarded as the world’s oldest such organization.
It handled domestic and foreign intelligence until 1968 when the Research and Analysis Wing was explicitly founded for alien intelligence. The IB was assigned mainly the duty of domestic spying and internal security. Arvind Kumar, the current director of the IB, succeeded Rajiv Jain on June 26, 2019.
