Bethany Ladies College was founded in 1911 with 44 students and four staff members, with the purpose of educating young women. BLC was purchased by the Norwegian Synod, afterwards known as the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS), in 1927. Until 1969, when the high school department was abolished, the ELS managed the school as a co-educational high school and junior college. Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary began as a department of Bethany Lutheran College in 1946 and became an independent university in 1975.

Tuition for full-time students studying 12-17 courses is $14,165. Full-time overload tuition is $400 per credit hour for each course exceeding 17 credits. Part-time tuition is $1,200 per credit hour for students taking less than 12 credits. The $150 tuition deposit is due 30 days after a student is accepted to Bethany Lutheran College and is applied to the student's first-semester tuition payment.
