The University of Sudbury was founded as the Collège du Sacré-Coeur in 1913 and was the first institute of higher learning in Northern Ontario. It is a bilingual and tri-cultural institution. It changed its name to the ‘University of Sudbury’ in 1957 and was established as a university with full teaching and degree-granting powers.

Since 1960, the University of Sudbury is a founding member of the Laurentian Federation.
