The University of Sudbury was founded as the Collège du Sacré-Coeur in 1913 and was the first institute of higher learning in Northern Ontario. It is a bilingual and tri-cultural institution. It changed its name to the ‘University of Sudbury’ in 1957 and was established as a university with full teaching and degree-granting powers.

Since 1960, the University of Sudbury is a founding member of the Laurentian Federation. University of Sudbury courses offer many programs including Philosophy, Indigenous Studies, Religious Studies, Folklore, and Études journalistiques and is the longest-standing post-secondary education institution. 

The students enrolled at the Laurentian University can pursue studies at any or all of the universities on the same campus: Huntington University, Laurentian University, Thorneloe University, and the University of Sudbury. The degrees, majors, minors, and courses taken at any of these universities are accredited towards a Laurentian University degree.
