Pearson’s Test of English (PTE) is an exam conducted for candidates who want to study, work or migrate to foreign countries where English is the main language used for communication. It is a computer-based test which determines whether the candidate can prove their English language competency. The test focuses on the candidate’s listening, reading, speaking and writing skills and the duration of the test is 3 hours. By testing these 4 skills, the candidate’s ability to understand the language is graded as the test focuses on the vocabulary used daily.

Why PTE?

The candidate’s score is graded using Artificial Intelligence (AI). An algorithm is used which is similar to how humans grade scores, which removes the biasedness factor of grading tests.

There are 3 packages you can choose for your preparation of PTE practice online. All of them contain scored practice tests and sample questions but the quantity differs in each package.

The silver test preparation kit contains one practice test along with the sample questions for INR 3018. The gold test preparation kit contains two practice tests along with sample questions for INR 4527. The platinum test preparation kit contains 3 practice tests along with sample questions for INR 6036.

There would be 70 sample questions provided with 20 question types. The package comes with tips to help the candidates with the test.

PTE Test Overview:

The PTE Test is about three-hours long and candidates must answer all three main parts of the test. The parts are divided into speaking and writing, listening and reading. Between reading the listening, candidates have a ten minute break to recuperate before heading back to the test.

Speaking and Writing: Here, your speaking and writing skill will be assessed in about 77-93 minutes. Your ability to speak in an English environment is assessed in this part of the PTE test and the writing section checks your use and understanding of grammar, sentence structure and spellings.
Reading: There are 15-20 skill items in this test and you will have to read information asked based on specific questions.
Listening: Audio clips will be played and you will be asked 17-20 questions based on the clips This part of the PTE test will test your ability to listen and analyse the English language.

PTE Online Test Format

The PTE will be conducted at a test centre and the candidate will have to use a computer and a headset to answer the questions. The 3-hour test consists of 3 sections; listening, reading and speaking and writing (together). The candidates have an optional 10 minutes break between the reading and listening section. The question format ranges from multiple-choice questions to essay type questions.

Since PTE focuses on the daily use of English language vocabulary, they will hear accents that they would normally hear in daily life, like the American or British accent.

The test format is as follows:

Speaking and Writing Test Format

This section is allotted between 77-93 minutes. The candidate’s speaking skills would be assessed with the ability to converse English in an academic environment. The candidate’s writing skills are determined by responding to questions using the right grammar and spelling.

The following tests are conducted to assess the candidate’s speaking and writing skills:

Personal Introduction: The candidate will get 25 seconds to read the prompt and have 30 seconds to record their response. The introduction is not scored but is used to send it to organizations or universities the candidates have applied for. They can record their answer only once.
Read Aloud: A paragraph of around 60 words appear on the screen and the candidates are given at least 40 seconds to prepare before they can record their response. They should start reading only when the microphone appears on the screen. If they stop answering for 3 seconds, the recording stops so the candidates should ensure they speak continuously until they are done reading the entire paragraph.
Repeating sentences: The task is to listen to a recording of a sentence and the candidates have to repeat exactly what has been said. They would be given 15 seconds to record their answer. There is no option of replaying the audio so the candidates have to focus on what is said the first time.
Describe image: An image would appear on the screen and the candidate has to speak in detail about the image for around 40 seconds. The candidate would be given 25 seconds to observe the image and they should ensure they speak clearly.
Re-tell lecture: The task is to watch a lecture and the candidate has to talk about the lecture in their own words. They would get 10 seconds to prepare and they can make notes while listening to the lecture.
Answer Short question: The task here is to respond to a question in one or a few words. The candidate would be given 10 seconds to respond to the question.
Summarize written text: The task here is to read a text and write a summary of one sentence containing 75 words which should be written in 10 minutes. The candidates also have the option to cut, copy and paste.
Essay: The candidates would be given a topic and they have to write between 200-300 words under 20 minutes.

Reading Test Format

This section is allotted time of 32-40 minutes. The candidates would be assessed based on their reading skills. There around 20 skill items given which tests the reading ability of the candidates.

Fill in the blanks: The task here is to fill out the gaps provided in a paragraph with the words given below. A drop-down list is provided and the candidate has to choose the best option.
Multiple choice, multiple answer: A passage would be provided and the candidates have to choose the best options for the questions asked. The answers chosen would be highlighted in yellow.
Re-order paragraph: There would be several text boxes given in the screen and the candidates have to choose the right order of the texts.
Fill in the blanks: There is a passage with missing words and the candidates should use the words provided in a blue box to fill in the gaps.
Multiple choice, single answer: After reading a text, the candidates have to choose the correct option out of several options provided.

Listening Test Format

This section is allotted time of 45-57 minutes. Audio or video clips would be played through which questions would be asked.

Summarize spoken text: The candidates have to write a summary of around 50-70 words after listening to a recording. They would be given 10 minutes to write the summary.
Multiple choice, multiple answer: After listening to a recording, a question would be asked for which you can choose multiple answers.
Fill in the blanks: The candidate is provided with a recording and they are given sentences with gaps which they would have to fill out with the appropriate answer.
Highlight correct summary: The candidates have to listen to a recording and choose a paragraph which fits the recording the most.
Multiple choice, single answer: After listening to a recording, a question would be asked for which there is only one right answer.
Select missing word: After listening to a recording, the last word or a group of words is replaced with a beep. The candidate has to choose the right option that fits the context of the recording.
Highlight incorrect words: In this task, the recording is filled with errors. The candidate has to identify the incorrect words.
Write from dictation: After listening to a recording, the candidate has to type a sentence with the exact words and also make sure there aren’t any spelling errors.
