How to Calculate CGPA in Engineering Colleges in India?
The CGPA calculation in the Indian engineering colleges is somewhat different from one another. The generalised method for the calculation of CGPA in the engineering colleges in India is:
Total Percentage/9.5 = CGPA
For instance, if a student has scored 400 marks in a total of 6 subjects in the semester, then his/her CGPa will be calculated in the below mentioned way:
The percentage of marks scored is to be calculated first:
400/600 * 100 = 66.66%
In order to calculate the CGPA, this percentage has to be divided by 9.5:
66.66/9.5 = 7.02 CGPA
The Indian engineering colleges follow two distinctive systems of gradation- Absolute Grading System and Relative Grading System. As per the Absolute Grading System, the total percentage attained by a student is calculated.
In the Relative Grading System, the individual performance is highlighted with respect to percentage scored by others.

How is CGPA Calculated in Engineering Colleges Abroad?
In order to understand the CGPa calculation in engineering colleges abroad, the concept of SGPA has to be understood. SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. The SGPA is calculated by multiplication of the credit points by 10. CGPA is calculated by credit points.
In simpler terms, the overall CGPA is the average of SGPA. The SGPA of all the semesters are to be added and then the total is to be divided by the number of semesters. This will give the CGPA.
While some universities abroad calculate the CGPA using 10, others calculate it using 4.
