The UON was founded in 1965 and was amalgamated with the Hunter Institute of Higher Education by the Dawkins reforms. The university along with (Griffith, Flinders, Macquarie, La Trobe, and Murdoch) formed an Innovative Research Universities Australia [IRUA].
