The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) has proudly defied traditional health professional education. It is Canada’s newest medical school and is also the first Canadian medical school hosted by two different universities, Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and Laurentian University in Sudbury. NOSM provides training in more than 90 communities across a geographic expanse of 800,000 square kilometres.

Faculties and Departments at Northern Ontario School of Medicine

The Faculty Affairs Unit of NOSM has a faculty strength of over 1700. It provides leadership, supervision, and representation for the faculty to ensure that the school always has the teaching resources to provide the highest quality of education to the students. It is responsible for recruitment, scheduling, and evaluation of the faculty and staff. 

The Faculty Affairs Unit comprises the three sciences that form the basis of the curriculum delivered at NOSM:

Faculty of Clinical Sciences

The Division of Clinical Sciences is responsible for teaching the clinical aspects of medicine to the students. It supports and manages the faculty resources that are involved in the teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programs. The different sections of Clinical Sciences are:

Faculty of Human Sciences

The Human Sciences Division at the NOSM is the organizational unit for research and teaching in the human sciences. Joint positions are with Laurentian University, Lakehead University, the Northwestern Ontario Region Cancer Centre, Thunder Bay, or the Ontario Regional Cancer Centres. Faculty of Medical Sciences

The Medical Sciences Division at the NOSM is the organizational unit for teaching and research in the basic medical sciences. The faculty members give lectures and demonstrations and also facilitate small group sessions in the undergraduate medical education curriculum. They also supervise externally-funded research programs that are supported by the major funding agencies for research in Canada and elsewhere. The different sections of disciplines in the Medical Sciences Division are:
