Students around the world flock to the college every year in the hopes of pursuing higher education, with vibrant campus life and being unapologetically themselves. Quite ironically, as they step inside the hallowed institution, they face the challenges of maintaining a strict dress code and an even more stringent attendance policy. 

Living up to the students’ expectations, Christ University offers a unique course curriculum for some of its popular programs like the BBA, MBA, BA LLB/ LLM, and BCA. These courses provide a deep dive into the core subjects, followed by the mandatory internship period. The students anticipate the start of internships, only to find that they have to hunt for it. The college has provided no support or assistance for the internships so far.

Advance Campus Facilities for the Win

Standing at par with other reputed institutions, Christ University has strived to build infrastructures incorporating modern technologies and equipment. Most certainly, the classes are equipped with Smart Classes, fostering peer-to-peer interaction. It is interesting to note that, with time, the university has upgraded the labs and introduced new features. For example, the Robotics, RF Testing, and CISCO Learning labs encourage students to test their theoretical knowledge. The college is well maintained, with various seating areas, halls, auditoriums, and internet connectivity throughout the campus.

Since its inception in 1969, the university library has been curated to stock up some of the finest literature, research papers, etc., from around the globe. This is mindfully implemented to give importance to addressing the individual educational needs of the students.

Typical to any institution, Christ University, Bangalore, organizes industry visits at a regular frequency for the students. It has previously organized visits to the ISRO, Tata, Consultancy Services (TCS), Mahindra Reva, Infosys, CDAC (Centre for Development and Advanced Computing), and many more. Not only this, but they have also arranged seminars and held visits of eminent personalities in art, politics, and defence, Nobel Laureates from time to time.

It is worth mentioning that before zeroing in on a particular college, apart from the programs, the students weigh in on the diversity and inclusion quotient. While Christ University admits students from over 77 countries, they also ensure to maintain a healthy male-to-female student ratio. 

The SC/ST/OBC/Minority/NRI/Divyangjan students also have a fair share among the student population. Delving into the Dress Code and General Code of Conduct

Upon gracing the college grounds, every first-year student is handed the “Student Code of Conduct.” An extensive rules and regulations book detailing how students should conduct themselves throughout their educational journey on campus. This goes without saying that the dress code acts as the crux of the conduct. 

Irrespective of one's gender, students are supposed to wear “decent and modest attire.” This is followed by an in-depth do’s and don’ts for the dress code. For example, girls are subjected to wearing salwar kameez and dupatta, while for boys, it is formal trousers and shirts. At any cost, girls and boys are to avoid wearing tights, leggings, and revealing clothes.

They are also to steer clear of hair colour, tattooing, or body piercing. They are also supposed to wear college identity cards at all times. At this point, one cannot help but wonder about the implications of such stringent rules. For a long time, such codes of conduct have received varied criticism from students. It is one of the significant concerns of displeasure among the college-goers.

How Accommodative are the Hostel and Food Facilities?

With a diverse set of students from over 77 countries, the campuses have hostel facilities for both boys and girls. The facilities provided at the residential rooms are comfortable and meet the everyday needs of the students. Before availing of the hostel facilities, students should remember that the hostel authorities provide no food facilities. They need to make food arrangements on their own. 

The hostellers are allowed only one hour of time each day from 8:15 PM to 9:15 PM for dinner. In case they fail to report on time, even by a minute, they are imposed a fine of INR 200. The canteen food inside the campus premises does burn a hole in the pocket, and the food quality is inasmuch as the students do not complain. As stated earlier, Christ University follows a strict 85% attendance policy. If students default to the same, they are asked to leave the hostel accommodation facility.

Security or Breach of Privacy?

Like any other student, safety concerns are paramount and remain at the forefront. For most parts, Christ University, Bangalore, provides tight security around the clock. The entire campus is under CCTV surveillance. Back in 2020, the students staged a widespread protest on Twitter against the online examinations amidst the lockdown. However, within a few hours, the tweets were taken down. Upon asking the Christ University administration, they declined to comment on the issue. The students were reluctant to express their opinions, citing they would not be promoted if they commented against the university. 

A similar trend concerning internet access can be observed inside the college premises. The students are provided with internet facilities only on their laptops. No internet access is given to their cellular phones or other devices. It is a growing concern among students in India to be under surveillance through various biometric and CCTV channels. It directly affects the mental and physical well-being of the students. In the past few years, the universities have stepped up their campus surveillance to maintain security and order. This sits directly in opposition to the students’ views.

Tussle Between AI and Originality

The Vice Chancellor of Christ University, Abraham V, recently concluded a meeting with the department heads. To curb the growing malpractice and plagiarism due to ChatGPT, the decision to revoke assignments as a medium to evaluate the student’s performance has been taken. It was also noted that if the faculties decide to assign any task, the students must complete so during class hours.

Vibrant College Festivals and Extracurricular Activities

Keeping on track with holistic development, Christ University has laid the foundation of student clubs, such as the HR Club, Marketing Club, CSR Club, LOS Club, and Finance Club, to name a few. These clubs are responsible for organizing timely activities to develop leadership skills and engage the students in various areas. They organize volunteering events, blood donation camps, debates and quizzes, group discussions, mock job interviews, and more. It also hosts “CHRI-SPO’, an intercollegiate/ university sports festival where students are high on camaraderie. Sports events, both for men and women, are organized. These include Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, Hockey, Throwball, Tennis, Kho-Kho, etc. 

Over the past 5 years, more than 500 events were organized with hospitals, NGOs, blood banks, and government agencies. It also organizes multi-cultural events such as the Bhasha Utsav. The Christies have brought home many accolades in sports and cultural events at international, national, and state levels.

Record Holding Placements

It is imperative that the placement records of any college are a vital factor in determining its success rate. The placement rates are almost always advertised at every college. Seemingly, a student's ultimate goal is to be placed at their desired companies at the end of their course. 

At Christ University, Bangalore, the placements are only organized for final-year students on the central campus. As per the latest records, the highest package received was 25 LPA. The top recruiters of the college are HCL, KPMG, ITC, Amazon, Infosys, and BOSCH.

The placement success rate of all the combined departments is 37.41%. At the same time, 31.48% of students opt for higher studies. A dedicated placement cell looks after the effective and smooth functioning of the recruitment process. However, only a few companies look to recruit undergraduate students.
