Since its inception in 1924, the department has been a leader producing many legal luminaries, Supreme Court and High Court judges, leading advocates, political leaders, policy makers and trend-setters in all walks of life. The department is endowed with elitist alumni even though it is an egalitarian institute providing practically free legal education at a negligible cost. With the unparalleled expertise of faculty members, multicultural environment and its seat at the heart of the national capital, the department attracts brilliant students from all over the country and abroad. The department has more than 130 teachers and about 7000 students at present including LL.B., LL.M., and Ph.D.students but functions within limited resources. It is completely funded by national exchequer through UGC and HRD Ministry.

The college offers a three year LLB degree course. The LL.M. and Ph.D. programmes are looked after directly by the Dean. The faculty members are drawn with diversified knowledge and experience. The faculties in the department have been pioneers in developing new fields of law like Intellectual property, environmental law, human rights education, gender sensitivity; uplifting women and poverty alleviation for the whole country. LL.B. is a three year law degree course an applicant who has graduated in any discipline of knowledge from a University established by an act of parliament or by a State legislature or an equivalent national institution recognized as a deemed to be University or foreign University recognized as equivalent to the status of an Indian University by an authority competent to declare equivalence, may apply for a three years degree program in law leading to conferment of LL.B. degree.

Admission to the proposed course requires minimum marks in  graduate/ post-graduate. Admission to LL.B courses requires minimum marks in the qualifying examination of the university as well. Details regarding admission criteria, eligibility, etc, are as follows:

  • For general candidates, graduate/ post-graduate degree from the university of Delhi or any other Indian or foreign university recognized as equivalent by the University of Delhi with at least 50% marks or an equivalent grade point in the aggregate in either of them.
  • For other backward classes (OBC) candidates, graduate/ post-graduate degree from the university of Delhi or any other Indian or foreign university recognized as equivalent by the University of Delhi with at least 45% marks.
  • For scheduled caste/ scheduled tribe (SC/ ST) candidates, a graduate/ post- graduate degree from the university of Delhi or any other Indian or foreign university recognized as equivalent by the university of Delhi with at least 40% marks. (As per bar Council of India requirements) 
  •  Relaxation of 5% marks in the minimum eligibility prescribed for general candidates will be allowed to widows/ wards of ex-servicemen as prescribed and wards of serving personnel (CW) category who are in receipt of gallantry awards.
  •  Relaxation of up to 5% marks in the minimum eligibility prescribed for general candidates will be allowed to the candidates belonging to physically handicapped (PH) category.

The college offers both (Two-Year/ Three-Year) LL.M. Degree courses. Admission to LL.M. course is made on the basis of merit in the LL.M. Entrance Test conducted each year.

  • For general category and other backward classes (OBC) candidates, a three-year/ five year LL.B. Degree from the University of Delhi or any other Indian or foreign University recognized as equivalent by the University of Delhi with at least 50% marks or an equivalent grade point in the aggregate for two-year/ three-year course LLM. The OBC candidates belonging to Non-creamy layer shall be given a relaxation in the minimum eligibility in the qualifying examination and in the minimum eligibility to take the entrance test to the extent of 10% of the minimum eligibility marks (50% prescribed for the general category less 10% = 45%). The benefit is available to castes which appear in the Central List of the OBC only.
  • The candidates belong to scheduled caste/ scheduled tribe (SC/ ST) having a three year/ five-year LL.B. degree from the University of Delhi or any other Indian or foreign University recognized as equivalent by the University of Delhi with at least 45% marks for 2yr/ 3yr LLM or an equivalent grade point in the aggregate in either of them.
  • Relaxation of 5% marks in the minimum eligibility prescribed for general candidates will be allowed to widows/ wards of ex-servicemen as prescribed and wards of serving personnel (CW) category who are in receipt of gallantry awards.

Faculty of Law, University of Delhi Ph.D.  2024

Faculty of Law, University of Delhi provides a Ph.D degree in LAW. Candidates who have qualified NET with JRF or have fellowship from any other equivalent examination, including those students who have appeared in "Ph.D. Relaxation will be given to the reserved category candidates as per University rules. It is mandatory that a student who submits the synopsis should consult a faculty member to guide him/ her for developing synopsis in his/ her relevant area.
