The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, established by the state government in 1996, has gained a reputation as one of the best Health Science universities in Karnataka. RGUHS has ensured to provide the students with the best education where the candidates enjoy a perfect balance of studies and recreation.

Despite its reputation, RGUHS has several challenges. Candidates have been discouraged by inadequate amenities, inadequate infrastructure maintenance, and inadequate placement prospects. The mess food on the campus provides quality vegetarian food that caters to North and South Indian students’ palates and has been well-known among the students for its taste and variety.

Moderate Hostel Facilities

The hostels at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences offer a comfortable stay with an entertainment zone and canteen. According to some students, some rooms in the hostels may be crowded, limiting space for daily activities for the students. The candidates have also reported that there is a need for more toilets and bathrooms to accommodate students adequately.

Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences has provided separate hostels for boys and girls and offers two types of rooms: premium and regular rooms. The hostel fee is INR 7,000 per month. Although the hostels are very well-maintained, the students feel that the administration must introduce occasional upgrades in amenities.

RGUHS offer hostel facility on the main campus itself in the following areas:

• For men: Lohit Hall of Residence, Panyor Hall of Residence, Twangchu Hall of Residence, and Tissa Hall of Residence.
• For women: Pare Hall of Residence, Yomgo Hall of Residence, and Kameng Hall of Residence.

The candidates can also avail of other options, such as PG near the campus of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. However, most students are okay with the hostel facilities and fees of RGUHS.

Moderate Placement Rates

The placement scenario at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences has received mixed student feedback. The institution has reported a lack of formal placement policy or established affiliations with medical institutions, which has put the burden on the students to secure placements after their graduation.

As for the internship programs, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences has succeeded in providing students with internships with an average stipend of INR 30,000, which has brought invaluable practical experience. 

The placement rates in the university may vary from year to year. Recently, for the batch of 2022, around eighty percent of students in the programs could secure placements where the salary packages ranged from INR 20000 to INR 450000. Some top recruiters were Western Digital, JSS Hospital, Apollo, and AIIMS Fortis, providing numerous internships and roles, primarily managerial positions.

The Paper Leak Controversy at RGUHS

On February 12, 2006, the entrance examination of PGET was held. Dr. V I Hukkeri, former registrar of RGUHS, was charged with leaking question papers to some particular students and triggered a CBI probe, resulting in charges against 20 individuals in the case.

Dr. Hukkeri's plea, which had hinted at a lack of prior sanction, was dismissed by the High Court. The court underlined the alleged fraudulent activities concerning question papers and candidates' marks. Nevertheless, it acknowledged Mekhala Dwarakanath's outstanding academic achievements and her innocence in the case, by checking her previously scored marks in the graduation.

This was a huge incident which almost brought Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in a negative limelight. Nevertheless, the institution has stressed on itself to improve and eradicate all kinds of corruption in the institution.
