Named after the clergyman Richard Furman, Furman University was established in 1826. It is the oldest private university of higher learning in South Carolina.

Furman University is authorized to grant bachelor's, education specialist, and master’s degrees by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. It was accredited in 1924.
