The University of Alabama (UA) is the state of Alabama’s oldest public university and is a senior comprehensive doctoral-level institution. It was established by the constitutional provision under statutory mandates and authorizations. Its mission is to advance the intellectual and social condition of the people of the state through quality programs of teaching, research, and service.
UA was established in 1831 with seven buildings, two faculty houses, two dormitories, the laboratory, the hotel (now Gorgas House), and the Rotunda.
UA is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and has an urban campus setting and is the oldest and largest of the public universities in Alabama as well as the flagship of the University of Alabama System.
UA became the first in the state to offer engineering classes. It was one of the first five in the nation to do so and one of the few to have maintained accreditation continuously since national accreditation began in 1936. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, master's, education specialist, and doctoral degrees.
UA offers degrees in the field of aerospace engineering and mechanics, chemical and biological engineering, civil, construction, and environmental engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical, and materials engineering, and Distance Learning.

UA is often referred to as "The Capstone" by alumni and friends of the university. "The Capstone" is a nickname for the University of Alabama coined by former UA President G. H. Denny when he referred to the University as the "capstone of the public school system of the state" in 1913. Capstone means 'the top stone or high point.' Some of the student services are:
UA with 38,320 students, enrolled the largest freshmen class in history in Fall 2021. It is the third year out of the last four years with a fall enrollment of more than 38,000 students. Graduate School enrollment of 6,152 is a 7% increase from fall 2020 and breaks last year's record enrollment number. The freshman class includes 281 National Merit Scholars, bringing the total number of currently enrolled National Merit Scholars to 940.
UA has achieved R1: Doctoral Universities on very high research activity status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. University of Alabama students continue to win prestigious national awards. It has produced a total of 15 Rhodes Scholars, 16 Truman Scholars, 36 Hollings Scholars, and 16 Boren Scholars. Thirty-six current UA faculty have received NSF CAREER Awards, one of the nation’s most prestigious recognition of top-performing young scientists, in disciplines ranging from nanoscience and engineering to biological sciences.
