The University of Rhode Island is a public research university with "strong science programs," including "one of the best marine biology programs in the Northeast." The URI College of Nursing was ranked first in New England and 37th nationally in government research funding from the National Institutes of Health. URI is ranked 170th out of 389 "national institutions" and 83rd out of 209 "top public schools" by U.S. News & World Report in 2021.

URI was recently added to the prestigious list of CyberCorps universities by the National Science Foundation, making it one of just 84 colleges in the country to offer substantial scholarships for service programs to qualified students.
