In May 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) released a comprehensive list of fake universities identified across India. There are a total of 21 such universities identified in 8 states including Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Among these, the highest number of fake universities have been identified in Delhi with 8 universities in total.
These fake universities in India as per UGC do not have any authority to offer any degree and have been marked as illegitimate institutions. Moreover, any degree pursued by these universities will not be recognised for higher education or employment as specified by UGC. The degrees obtained from these universities will not be recognized, either for higher education or for employment.

What are Fake Universities in India as per UGC?
According to Section 22 of the UGC Act, only institutions recognized by the UGC or established by an act of Parliament or State Legislature can confer degrees. Section 23 further prohibits unapproved institutions from using the term "university."
