The full form of TNPSC is Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. It is a government organization with its headquarters in Chennai. The main role of this commission is to provide recruitment to candidates for various posts under the organization.

Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), a government body responsible for governing the recruitment of candidates to various posts in the Tamil Nadu Government. Its old name was the Madras Service Commission which was the first Provincial Public Service Commission in India. The new name came into being in the year 1970.

TNPSC Eligibility Criteria

TNPSC commission sets up the eligibility criteria and age limit every year. These exams are conducted to recruit candidates into several posts of the Tamil Nadu government.

The eligibility criteria for the various posts of the TNPSC exam are as follows:

Archaeological Officer
Agricultural Officer
Civil Judge
Other Posts

Archaeological Officer

The age limit for a candidate to write the archaeological officer exam minimum is 18 years, and the maximum age limit is 30 years except for the candidates belonging to the SC/SC Category.

Other eligibilities include,

They should have Tamil as a subject which they have passed in their degree.
They should have a Masters degree in Ancient History and Archaeology or Indian history or Tamil from a recognized university.
They should provide a certificate for physical fitness to be deemed eligible for the exam.

Agricultural Officer

There is no age requirement for candidates belonging to the SC/ST Category, while other candidates have the maximum age requirement of 30 years (For candidates holding an undergraduate degree in agriculture) and 32 years (For candidates holding a Masters degree in agriculture)

Other eligibilities include,

They should have skills in the Tamil language.
The candidates should have a graduate degree in Agriculture from a recognized university.
They should provide a certificate for physical fitness to be deemed eligible for the exam.

Civil Judge

Criteria for practising advocates/prosecutors:

The age limit for the candidates is between 25-35 years, except for candidates belonging to SC/ST Category. The maximum limit for those candidates is up to 40 years.
They should have a degree in law from a recognized University, and the candidates should have enrolled themselves in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu or any other state.
They should be practising law as an advocate for at least 3 years or
They must be an assistant public prosecutor with 3 years of practice.

Criteria for fresh law graduates:

The age limit for all candidates, irrespective of their category, is 22-27 years.
The candidates should have a degree in law with an aggregate of 50% marks, while it is 45% for candidates belonging to SC/ST category.
The candidates should have registered to enrol as an advocate.
The candidates must have obtained their degree 3 years before the notification date.

TNPSC Registration Process

The authority follows a one-time registration process which all candidates should follow.

The registration process for the examination of various posts of TNPSC is as follows:

Visit the official website for TNPSC.
The registration fee for the TNPSC exam is INR 100.
The candidate should enter the details required and upload their photograph, certificates, and signature documents wherever required.
The candidates should click on 'submit', and the account would be created.
The candidate should use the login credentials to apply for the TNPSC exam.
The candidate can click on the post they want to apply for, which the website would notify.
After reviewing the details and payment of the registration fee, the application would be generated.

TNPSC Selection Process

If the candidate is determined and has a strong commitment, they will win the TNPSC exams. But always know the processes you will be going through.

The selection process of various posts under TNPSC is as follows:

Archaeological Officer: The candidates will be selected based on the written examination and document verification and later a counselling process.
Agricultural Officer: The candidates need to qualify for paper 1 and paper 2. The interview also has a weightage of 70 marks. The final selection of the agricultural officer recruitment process will be made based on the marks received for the exams and interview.
Civil Judge: The candidates have to qualify for the preliminary and main examination as well as attend the viva, after which training will be given for 12 months.

TNPSC Group-2 Details

The TNPSC or Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission conducts the Combined Civil Services Examination-II (CCSE-II.) This exam helps the TNPSC recruit candidates for civil services in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The details for the TNPSC Groups 2 and TNPSC Group 2A are mentioned below:

For Group 2, the candidates will be selected based on the preliminary exam, the main exam, and then an oral interview.
For Group 2A, candidates must score the required marks in the written exam.

TNPSC Vacancies

There are 18 vacancies for the post of an archaeological officer, 12 posts for assistant director/superintendent, and 69 vacancies for Group-1 civil services exam posts. The vacancies in TNPSC group 2 2021 are around 1500 - 3000. The vacancies for TNPSC groups 3 and 4 are yet to be announced, and the latest update will be released soon.

History of TNPSC

In 1923, the Indian Government decided to establish a Public Service Commission to review the Indian Civil Service's salary structure and transfer some of its duties to the provincial services. This commission focused on increasing the rate of Indianisation of the Indian Civil Service and the Indian Police. The commission consisted of 5 Englishmen and 4 Indians and a Chairman, Viscount Lee of Fareham. The commission was adamant about ensuring the rate increased by 50% for both Indian Civil Service as well as the Indian Police, in 15 and 25 years, respectively.

The power to recruit and have control over these services were handed to the provincial Government. This resulted in the Government of Madras and Punjab setting up their public service commission.

Madras Presidency became the first department in India to establish its service commission under the Act of the Madras legislature in 1929. The Madras Service Commission began its journey with 3 members, which included the Chairman. In 1957, the states of our country were reorganized, which resulted in the constitution of several other state-level commissions. They established their headquarters at Madras and renamed their commission to Madras Public Service Commission in the same year. In 1970, when the state name was changed to Tamil Nadu, the commission was renamed again as the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC).

Functions of TNPSC

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission performs its duties and functions, specified in Article 320 of the Constitution of India.

Functions of TNPSC are as follows:

Advising Government on the matters of the framework of rules and principles regarding recruitment of candidates for the State, Subordinate and Ministerial Services.
Conducting departmental exams for Government servants and on behalf of the Ministry of Defence for admission to the school run by the Rashtriya Indian Military College.
The Secretary holds the responsibility of handling the day-to-day administrative tasks, interviews for recruitment, committees for departmental promotions, and implementation of decisions.
The exam controller ensures the recruitment exam process goes smoothly, from notifications of examination to providing hall tickets to the candidates.
