The list of top colleges in India as per NIRF 2024 overall ranking has been released on Aug 12, 2024, by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has secured 1st position in NIRF ranking 2024 list with 86.42 NIRF score.
Further, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (IISC Bengaluru) has been given NIRF 2024 rank as 2nd with 83.28 scores. The NIRF Rank 2024 is given based on certain assessment criteria which includes Teaching Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity and Perception.
Further, three new categories have been added in the academic session 2024, namely, Open University, Skilled University, and State University. The NIRF rankings 2024 are also a good reference for students looking for the top colleges and universities based on different streams like Engineering, Management, Architecture, etc.

Classifications of Institutions in NIRF Ranking
The core committee involved in the formation of the NIRF classified the institutions into 2 categories as category A and B. The institutions under category A are of national importance set up by Acts of Parliament, State Universities, etc.
Whereas, the category B includes institutions affiliated to a University and do not enjoy full academic autonomy. The classification details are provided below.
- Category A Institutions: These are institutions of national importance set up by Acts of Parliament, State Universities, Deemed-to-be Universities, Private Universities and other autonomous institutions.
- Category B Institutions: These are institutions affiliated to a University and do not enjoy full academic autonomy.

History of NIRF Ranking 2024
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 is a methodology framework, launched on February 29, 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resources Development to rank the institutions of higher education in India.
Initially, the NIRF had 4 categories namely: Universities, Engineering, Management and Pharmacy which was released in 2016. Later on, in 2017, the category list was updated with NIRF with 2 more categories- Overall and College and ranked the top ones among 3000 institutions. In 2018, there was an increasing number of institutions which lead to the addition of 9 more categories.
