UGC NET normalization process 2023 helps authorities to standardize marks obtained by candidates in various sessions of an examination. The UGC NET normalization process is based on the percentile score of the candidates.

The percentile score of a candidate tells the percentage of the total number of candidates who have scored lower or above it in the examination. The candidates’ percentile scores are used to prepare the merit list.

What is UGC NET Normalization 2023?

The NTA conducts the UGC NET examination on multiple days, with generally two sessions per day. Important points related to normalization in UGC NET have been given below:

• UGC NET normalisation helps authorities compare candidates’ marks across multiple paper shifts. 
• The UGC NET normalization process 2023 uses the percentile equivalence method. 
• Percentile scores are marks obtained by a candidate concerning all those who appeared for the exam in that shift. 
• The raw marks of the candidates are transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees.
• The candidates’ percentile scores are used to prepare the merit list. The scores will be calculated up to seven decimal places to reduce ties in the score.

Step 1 - The Distribution of Candidates in two sessions

The total number of candidates that appeared for the UGC NET 2023 examination was distributed in two shifts randomly. The sessions were held as follows -

• Session 1: Day 1/Shift 1
• Session 2: Day 1/Shift 2

Distribution of candidates randomly helps authorities eliminate any bias while taking the examination. Since many candidates appear for the exam in the entire nation, the possibility of bias becomes low.

Step 2: Preparation of Results for each Session

The marks obtained by the candidate in the exam are known as the raw score. The percentile score of each candidate is calculated based on the raw scores. 

The Percentiles would be calculated for each candidate in the session as follows:

	Let TP1 be the Percentile Score of the Total Raw Score of that candidate.

The examination results for each shift of the exam are calculated based on the following:

• The raw scores of the candidates.
• The percentile scores of the total raw scores.

Step 3 - Compilation of NTA Score & Preparation of UGC NET Result

The percentile scores of all the candidates in each shift is merged and is called the NTA scores. The NTA scores are used for the compilation of the result and further processing for deciding the allocation.

The Percentile Scores for the Total Raw Score for the Session will be merged and called the “NTA Scores”. The NTA Scores will be used for UGC NET Result 2023 and the allocation of ranks. 

The lowest percentile will be the eligibility cutoff for that particular category for candidates in all shifts. For example: If an exam is held in three shifts, and the percentile score in shift 1 for a raw score of 60 % is 85, and the percentile score for the same raw score is 89. Then all candidates that score equal to or above 85 in both shifts will be eligible in the general category. This method is used to determine the eligibility cutoff for all categories.

• The UGC NET normalization process 2023 helps the authorities compare students’ performances on a common scale. 
• UGC NET 2023 exam is scheduled to be conducted from Dec 6 to Dec 14, 2023. 
• Authorities must ensure that the admissions are based on a score that accurately compares the students’ performance. 
• The process ensures that the score of the candidate is not affected by the difficulty level of the paper in various shifts.
• With many such candidates participating in the exam, it is difficult to maintain the same level of questions.
