Though it is one of the best academic institutions for Engineering programs in the city, Bangalore Institute of Technology falls behind in terms of its infrastructural facilities and extracurricular activities. Yet, its placement records compensate for all its shortcomings.

GetMyUni's Verdict on Bangalore Institute of Technology

Regarded as one of the best institutes in the city, Bangalore Institute of Technology is an ideal institute for those who are focused majorly on academics. Though the institute is located in the heart of the town, it has a comparatively more minor infrastructure with limited facilities. However, it has an established reputation for offering successful placement opportunities for students, which makes it an ideal option for students seeking a career in the Engineering field.

Like all institutes, BIT also has its strengths and weaknesses. While it has an impressive placement record, it falls behind in offering an energetic campus environment due to its lack of extracurricular activities and events. However, it remains to be a top institute regardless of its weaknesses.

Overall, students have expressed their satisfaction with the academic prospects and career opportunities offered. Even though certain factors are not up to the mark, the institute remains one of the best places for students who aspire to achieve successful careers.

Table of Contents

Well-Regarded Programs

Affiliated under the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), BIT Bangalore was founded in the late 1970s. As mentioned earlier, the academic programs offered by the institute are well-regarded, especially the Engineering courses available in various disciplines.

According to students, the course curricula include all the relevant subjects and concepts that are in line with the current industry requirements, which makes it easier for students to succeed in their professional endeavours. The institute has marked its place within the educational field through some of its excellent courses.

The institute has well-rounded facilities and resources that ensure students have access to the newest technologies to enhance their academic lives. While the academic curriculum at the institute is highly appreciated, students have mentioned on online platforms that the institute is primarily focused on the marks scored by the students, even if it's through memorisation, and is not concerned with the development of problem-solving or critical thinking skills of the students.

BIT Annual Event

The institute offers a wide range of courses across different fields at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Mainly famous for its Engineering courses, the institute also offers programs in the Management field. Some of the best courses offered by the institute that are highly recommended by current and former students for its course curricula and placement offers are as follows:

  • B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering
  • B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • B.Tech in Civil Engineering
  • B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
  • B.Tech in Information Technology
  • Master of Technology (M.Tech) in different disciplines
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Master of Computer Applications (MCA).

While the institute is known to maintain a good balance between theoretical and practical learning, it is said to have limited research opportunities for students. Though it is limited, the institute also offers opportunities to its students by partnering with industry leaders. Through such collaborations, the institute organises various academic events, such as workshops, guest lectures, seminars, etc., which help students learn more about the particular field and gain insights into their career prospects.

Expensive Courses

As it is a private institution, the course fee structure at BIT is comparatively higher than the course fees in government institutions. This makes it less accessible for students who belong to underprivileged backgrounds. Although it is lower than most private institutions, there are no particular fee relaxations based on the students' category or economic background.

The course fees are different for each course based on the program type, specialisation and the course requirements. It also varies depending on the mode of admission, i.e., the course fees are significantly higher for those who have obtained seats in the institute through the Management quota.

BIT Hackathon

Based on the previous year's fee structure, the annual tuition fee for undergraduate programs ranges between INR 3.86 lakhs and INR 5.87 lakhs. The annual fee structure for postgraduate programs, like M.Tech, MBA and MCA courses, is said to fall between INR 64,000 and INR 1.08 lakhs.

In addition to the tuition fees, the students are also required to pay additional fees as per student needs, such as library fees, exam fees, laboratory charges, etc.

Attendance Policy

As it is an affiliated institute, students are mandated to follow the rules and regulations prescribed by the central university. According to university policies, students must maintain the minimum attendance requirement to be eligible to appear in the end-semester examinations. However, students have mentioned online that the institute is not strict about attendance.

Average Faculty Members

According to students' reviews on online platforms, the number of experienced and qualified faculty members is lower than expected. Most of the professors at the institute are only keen on completing the course syllabus, and they cannot provide additional information and training to the students. Based on these online reviews, most students have to prepare themselves if they are interested in gaining further knowledge.

While most of the professors are not up to the mark, some professors are highly praised by the students for their knowledge and approachability. Such professors are dedicated to imparting quality education and are willing to go the extra mile to support and guide their students.

BIT Professors

One of the significant drawbacks of the faculty members at the institute is the outdated teaching methods. Though some professors use interactive teaching methods to make their classes more informative and engaging, the majority of the professors stick to traditional teaching methods, which may not be helpful for some students.

In addition to that, the professors are said to lack communication skills, which restricts their students from approaching them with doubts or discussions.

Overall, the professors at the institute are average at best. Students have mentioned that the academic excellence that the institute has acquired is solely based on its well-structured course curriculum. Most of the time, students are forced to learn and prepare for their courses by themselves, without any additional support from their professors.

Small Infrastructure

Situated in the centre of Bangalore, the institute has a relatively minor infrastructure compared to the other private institutions located on the outskirts of the town. However, it has a well-maintained infrastructure that includes all the necessary facilities and amenities for a well-rounded academic development.

BIT Infrastructure

However, students have mentioned on online forums that they were disappointed with how small the infrastructure is. In any case, the classrooms at the institute are well-equipped with audio-visual aids, like projectors, whiteboards, etc., and have a comfortable seating arrangement. The classrooms are specially designed to ensure the professors can include interactive teaching techniques to enhance the students' learning experience.

Each department has a well-established laboratory equipped with the necessary instruments and amenities to facilitate a well-rounded practical learning experience. Though students have mentioned that some departments have outdated and poorly maintained facilities, most laboratories have the latest instruments and technology to provide students with hands-on experience in their respective disciplines.

BIT Sports Event

The central library at the institute is an essential part of its academic infrastructure, which houses an extensive collection of books, journals, periodicals and other necessary resources. Along with a vast collection of printed materials, the library also has a decent collection of electronic resources, like e-books, e-journals and online databases, which the students can access through the computer systems with internet connectivity available within the library.

As the institute's infrastructure is small, the sports facilities available here are limited. Nevertheless, there are sufficient facilities for popular indoor and outdoor sports activities like badminton, football, cricket, etc. In addition to that, the institute also has a decently equipped gymnasium, which is utilised by the students to maintain their physical fitness.

The canteens at the institute are regarded as the most happening places within the campus. There are two canteens located in different parts of the campus, which makes it easier for the students to relax and eat in between classes. Both the canteens serve a variety of food and beverages at a reasonable price. These canteens are well-maintained and hygienic, with spaces for the students to engage in conversation and hang out with friends.

BIT Canteen

In addition to the facilities mentioned above, the institute also boasts several other essential facilities like a health centre, auditorium, seminar halls, bank, and many more. Also, students have easy access to the urban facilities available within the city because of its location. In short, the institute has a well-facilitated infrastructure, though there are areas where it requires renovation and improvement.

Limited Housing Facilities

Though the institute provides housing facilities for both boys and girls, there are limited spots for the students, which forces most of the students to opt for private accommodation. Also, only the boys' hostel is located on campus, whereas the girls' hostel is situated away from the campus. Though there are public transport facilities readily available to the students, it is still inconvenient due to the heavy traffic at peak hours.

BIT Hostel

The boy's hostel located within the campus has only rooms for around 385 students. However, the hostel has all the basic amenities, such as a well-equipped gymnasium, centralised water plant, solar water heater, laundry facilities and recreational facilities.

Each student is provided with a separate bed, table, chair and cupboards. As the rooms are on a shared occupancy basis, there are no attached bathrooms, and only shared bathrooms are available.

Timely meals are served on weekdays through its clean and hygienic mess facilities. The hostel mess provides both North and South Indian food. Though the quality of the food served is mediocre, the general hygiene and cleanliness in the mess and dining areas are maintained.

The safety and security of the students are assured by the 24/7 security guards placed at the gates. In addition to that, the institute has installed CCTV cameras on each floor to ensure round-the-clock security.

The institute has strict rules and regulations regarding curfew timings, guest visitors, and other matters that must be followed by all students. In case a student breaks one of these rules, they are bound to pay a requisite fine.

BIT Tech Event

According to the latest structure, the annual hostel fee for fresh admission is INR 1,10,000 per year and INR 95,000 from the second year onwards. As there are limited housing facilities provided by the institute, most students prefer off-campus, private housing in apartments and PGs. Since the institute is located within the city, there are numerous PGs available near the institute for different rents based on the preferences and budget of the students.

Students also share apartments with their peers for affordable rent. Typically, the monthly rent for private accommodation ranges from INR 5000 to INR 15,000, based on the occupancy type, facilities and luxuries.

Dull Campus Life

As the institute is primarily focused on academics, there are limited extracurricular activities and events at the institute. It has numerous technical and academic clubs and societies for different activities like robotics, electronics, coding, etc. These clubs organise educational events and tech fests where students can enhance their leadership skills and showcase their innovative ideas.

BIT Social Event

Apart from academic-related events, the institute also organises cultural events occasionally, where students can perform and participate in various competitions for dance, music, drama, etc.

Along with that, the institute has a dedicated physical education department that conducts various sports tournaments and competitions for football, basketball, cricket, volleyball, etc. The active sports culture in the institute also encourages students to participate in inter-college competitions.

However, as mentioned before, the institute has fewer activities and events organised yearly in comparison to the other prominent private institutions. Due to its priority for academics, students find it challenging to manage extracurricular activities along with a rigorous course curriculum.

Diversity on Campus

As the institute is located in one of the biggest cities in the country, several students from different regions are part of the student community here. Although the majority of the students at the institute are locals, the institute has a rich cultural exchange with students from diverse backgrounds.

BIT Cultural Event

It also has a decent balance between gender ratio. However, due to its expensive course fee structure, there are a limited number of students from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Dress Code

The institute does not have a defined uniform for its students, nor does it have a specific dress code that needs to be followed. Nonetheless, students are expected to wear decent and modest clothing appropriate for an academic setting. They are refrained from wearing revealing and offensive clothing.

High Placement Rates

One of the main reasons why students prefer BIT to other private institutions is its impressive placement records. It has achieved an average placement rate of more than 90% through the years, with students receiving high salary packages from reputed companies.

Although there are variations in the placement rates across different disciplines, on average, it has managed to offer good career opportunities to its graduates from almost all branches.

The institute's active collaboration with industry leaders has played a significant role in providing the students with good placement opportunities. In addition to that, the institute has a well-established alumni network with several past students in high positions in reputed companies.

Based on the records from the previous year, the Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology departments have witnessed significant growth in their placement rate. Students are recruited by top companies across different industries and sectors.

According to the placement record for the past year, the highest salary package offered to the students was INR 37.5 LPA, and the average salary package ranges from INR 6.5 LPA to INR 7 LPA.

Final Verdict on Bangalore Institute of Technology

Bangalore Institute of Technology is one of the best institutes in the city for Engineering courses. Its solid academic excellence and high success rate in offering impressive placements have made it one of the best choices for students who have high hopes of pursuing a successful career in the field.

However, as it is primarily focused on academics, students may find it challenging to cope with the rigorous course curriculum and competitive atmosphere.

Moreover, the institute has a smaller infrastructure than the other private colleges in the city and limited extracurricular activities, which may discourage students from pursuing their education here. However, the institute is an ideal place for students who are only focused on academics and in their careers.

Furthermore, students are advised to connect with past and present students to learn more about their desired course curriculum, faculty members and career prospects. Some of the pros and cons of being part of Bangalore Institute of Technology are listed below to know what to expect from the institute.

Pros Cons
Strong academic excellence Expensive course curriculum
Well-designed course curriculum Lack of infrastructural facilities
Impressive placement records Limited hostels
Located in the heart of the city Inconsistent quality of professors
