Barkatullah Vishwavidyalaya Institute formerly known as Bhopal University was established in the year 1970. It has a campus area covering over 400 acres. Barkatullah Vishwavidyalaya Course provides a wide range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Arts, Science, Commerce, Computer, Management, Journalism, Tourism and Hotel Management and henceforth.

The Institute of Open and Distance Education was previously known as the Department of Correspondence which was established in the year 1975. The Higher Education Grant Commission for the establishment of the institute provides the financial assistance of five lakhs so that it will be sustainable in the future for many years. In 1977 the Barkatullah Vishwavidyalaya Institute name was changed to the Institute of Open and Distance Education.

The Institute also plans to establish some job oriented professional courses and wishes to have some connectivity with the Institute of Open and Distance Education so that it will be a great academic benefit to the students. The student can access all the relevant information he or she wants such as the scheme of an exam, library, class schedule and many more.
