College Infrastructure & Hostel Facilities :
The college building is new with wide classrooms. They got new benches when we were in the 3rd year.
The library is well stocked. The library staff is friendly and helpful. The college adds books to the library in case of unavailability when the students bring it to the notice of the Principal.
There are no Law college hostels. Students have to depend on PGs outside.
There are many eateries around the college but there is no canteen inside the college building.
No college Wi-Fi is provided.
Entrance Exams & Admissions :
The eligibility criteria according to Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) to join the 5 years law course is to have an aggregate above 50% in 10+2 State Board/CBSC/ICSE.
The cutoff in BMSCL varies every year. The college announces the cutoff around admission time.
When I joined BMSCL in 2012 there were no entrance exams as such but they would consider the ranking in CLAT followed by an interview. Presently, the college conducts an entrance test for aspirant students the details of which can be found out on the college website or by paying a visit to the college office. The staff are very helpful.
The procedure for admission is to get the application form from the college. They will then notify the dates of the entrance test to the applicants. Those who get through the test will be allowed to pay the fees and enroll for classes.
They usually start giving out applications around March-April.
Placements & Internships :
For the five years law course, every student needs to have interned for a minimum of 20 weeks in any law firm or NGO or any government institution. They can intern at all kinds of law related institutions. It a requirement under the practical part of the curriculum to maintain an internship diary.
A formal certificate regarding the internship with the number of days/weeks of the internship has to be submitted to the college as a part of the curriculum. It is advisable to start interning from the first year itself.
Most law firms that handle litigation do not pay a stipend. As a law student you need to be prepared to not get paid where you intern. Although some law firms do pay reasonable stipend.
The College conducts Alumni meet every year and the Alumni network is getting wider every year. The students get the chance to intern at law firms of the Alumni which can prove to be a wonderful experience. The Alumni Meets themselves are pretty amazing. That is probably what is unique about studying in a 50 year old institution. You get to listen to the experiences of Alumni from all age groups. It is a learning opportunity in itself.
Fees & Scholarships :
The course fee increases every year as per the University guidelines.
The international students have a higher amount of fees than Indian students though.
Full-year scholarships are not available through the College. But the college through few members of the Alumni Committee gives a one-time scholarship money to outstanding students every year during College Day.
Academics & Faculty :
College starts at 9AM, goes on till 2:30PM. The classes wind up early so that students get time to do research or go to their respective internships.
Semester exams are during December-January and June-July. There are internal assessments through out the semester. Assignments are required to be done according to the prescribed syllabus which the University has the tendency to change every year.
During the even semesters the University sports events and College sports events are conducted. Students can practice in the Engineering Campus.
The quality of teaching is good. They have added new members to the faculty now. The senior lecturers are very supportive. They wouldn't mind teaching concepts till the students are satisfied with the subject. Students can approach any lecturer and they will teach any concept the student is having trouble grasping. Not just about academic work but also for guidance about Moot Court and other competitions. The lecturers are always helpful.
The overall experience in college is that students get to learn things first hand when it comes to organizing various competitions and programmes in college. There are many activities that they can participate in. Almost everything students participate in the college helps them learn to take responsibility and eventually helps them grow into responsible individuals. When they go to invite judges for certain competitions they get to meet many important people directly. That is a great way to start building one's network. The room to grow is wide.
Clubs & Associations :
The Moot Court Society is started every year. That is the only society or club that the students get to be a part of. The society is formed to help organize and host the Inter-college Moot Court Competition.
The official College Fest was organized for the first time in 2017 which I got to be a part of. They have made this a yearly event. The college fest is organized in the even semester.
The sports fest is also organized every year. Law colleges all over the state participate in the BS Narayan Memorial Sports events.
Teachers Day, Freshers' day, Ethnic day, College day are some of the exciting events that are conducted every year which every student can participate in.
The life in college is pretty great. When the academics get hectic we have the other events to distract ourselves with. It is an amazing opportunity to meet like-minded people who may turn into friends for life.
