Ranchi, once the summer capital of Bihar, became known for its mental health treatment due to the presence of two major psychiatric institutions. The Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), Ranchi, established in 1918 as the Ranchi European Lunatic Asylum, was initially meant only for European and American patients. As noted by Col. Berkeley-Hill, it was the only Indian mental hospital exclusively for people of European or Anglo-Indian descent.CIP is renowned for many milestones in Indian psychiatry. It introduced the first Occupational Therapy Department in 1922, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) in 1943, and pioneered psychosurgery and neurosurgery in 1947. It also established departments of clinical psychology and EEG in 1948, and neuropathology in 1952. Other key developments include the introduction of Lithium and chlorpromazine in the 1950s, advanced radiology facilities in 1954, and initiatives like the child guidance clinic (1950), rural mental health clinic, and industrial psychiatry unit at HEC Ranchi. The Indian Psychiatric Society was founded in 1948 due to CIP’s efforts, and the first draft of India's Mental Health Act (1987) was written at the institute in 1949. CIP's long history of contributions has made it a cornerstone in the field of Indian mental health.
