“The Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University is committed to develop and provide state-of-art infrastructure that fosters excellent academic and research environment. However, the University that is over 30 years old still has quite a long path ahead to achieving its mission.”
Established in 1989, the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University is an important Technological University in the state of Maharashtra. The University offers students quality education at affordable prices, albeit the placement record is sub-par, and the infrastructure still needs more development.
One of the major aspects of the University is that it is located in a village and is far from the major cities like Pune or Mumbai. While this gives the college campus its peaceful and secluded ambience, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it also means that there is less exposure to opportunities for the students.
A matter of criticism at the University is the inefficiency of the administration. The administrative issues at the University have a far-reaching effect on the teaching and learning experience of the faculty and students.
Table of Contents
The DBATU offers a variety of courses across its 8 departments. The courses are provided at the include 58 undergraduate, 66 postgraduate and 15 doctoral programs. In addition to BTech, MTech and PhD, the University also offers Diploma, MCA and MBA courses. The postgraduate programs are offered on a full-time and part-time basis in various specialisations of Mechanical Engineering and interdisciplinary areas.
The University offers several courses and specialisations for students to choose from. The University also introduces new courses every academic year. The quality of the courses is high as they prepare the students for their industrial careers.
The DBATU is a state-run university, so the courses are affordable. The course fee for the Btech courses comes well under INR 1 Lakh, and for MTech courses, it comes well under INR 50,000. Hence, it can be concluded that the affordability of the University is high. Moreover, the University offers scholarships under various schemes to meritorious students and students coming from backward communities. The students who are eligible for the scholarship can apply for them at the time of admission.
The faculty at the DBATU are well qualified and have sufficient teaching experience to guide the students towards academic excellence and professional success. The students generally find their professors friendly, helpful and easily approachable. However, some have commented that the faculty numbers in a few departments are less than required to serve students' needs adequately.
The DBATU has sufficient and well-maintained infrastructure to cater to students' academic, extracurricular and residential needs. The sprawling 486-acre campus is filled with natural vegetation and well-structured buildings. The campus is very green, and the students can find peace and solace within the campus. Being in an isolated location, the campus is far away from the noisy cities.
The laboratories provide all the necessary testing and analysis facilities for the students' use. The labs are well equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and are well maintained. The classrooms are equipped with digital projectors and smart class facilities, bringing the teaching and learning experience to the 21st century.
The campus also contains other infrastructural facilities such as a conference hall, auditorium, playground, workshop, and computing facilities. The campus is covered by WiFi accessibility, and the internet speed averages at 2 Mbps. Moreover, the campus ensures the safety of the students with security services and 24x7 CCTV surveillance.
The University has a 21000 square feet library with a collection of more than 1 lakh Print Books and Periodicals, which is partially digitised. In addition to the academic books, the library also has a collection of collected works of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi and other influential personalities. The library also provides the students with e-resources, Journals, newspapers and Magazines.
The University has both indoor and outdoor sports facilities. The indoor facilities include T Tables, Carrom boards and Chess Boards at the Students Activity Centre and in the hostels. The outdoor facilities include Football, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Handball ground with goalposts, Cricket pitch, Basketball, and Volleyball grounds. Moreover, there are facilities for Yoga and also a gymnasium.
The University offers several hostels for the students - for male and female students. There are 2 girls and 3 boys hostels to accommodate students from different years. The rooms are on a sharing basis and are furnished with essential items such as bed, table, chair, light etc. The hostels also provide gym facilities for the hostellers. However, some students have complained about the quality of the water available in the hostels. The students do not have another drinking water source, so this creates a problem for them.
The hostel fees are very affordable. Students say that since the fees are low, the quality of the hostels is also on par with it. Some students opt for alternative options for accommodation, like PGs and hostels that are available in the surrounding village. Although such options are very sparse. The mess in the hostels provides food to the students. The food quality and taste have been remarked as average. The mess fees are also affordable as they are run on a no-profit-loss basis.
The Career Development Cell at DBATU works towards securing placements for the students graduating from the University. The placement rate at the University is relatively low at 22%. The number of companies visiting the campus is relatively less, which can be attributed to the University's remote location.
Moreover, some departments fare better in the placement rate than others. For instance, the computer engineering department does pretty well compared to the other departments. The placement packages offered are also subpar for most students, with an average of around 3-4 LPA.
The students studying at DBATU get the opportunity to participate in several events that are conducted over the course of the year. The University conducts many intra and inter-departmental competitions and fests. Fests like “Antarang” and "Cynosure" are a time of great enthusiasm within the student community.
The University does not prescribe students a strict dress code or uniforms. However, they are expected to dress in a way that is befitting of the academic and professional environment.
Students are expected to adhere to the minimum required attendance in each theory/laboratory course, which will be 75% for appearing at the end-semester examination.
Most of the students studying at the University are from the state of Maharashtra. However, there is significant diversity in the socio-religious-economic background of the students.
Several students have expressed their dissatisfaction with the administration at the University and the Government levels. This has been a significant point of concern for the students, as it is something that affects their smooth and comfortable experience at the University.
To summarise, DBATU is a University that has the ability to kick-start its students' academic and professional lives. However, much like any other institution, the University has several aspects that it needs to improve in. For students thinking of joining the University, the pros and cons should help them come to a decision:
