GITAM Institute of Pharmacy, Visakhapatnam Infrastructure: Library, Hostel, Labs, Gym, Auditorium & Other Facilities

GIP which offers Pharmacy programme is located at Visakhapatnam in a 8 storied building named after a man of miracle drugs Dr. Yellapragada  subbaRao  with a total built up area of 12185 Sq.Mt with amenities and circulation areas of 6764.90 sq.mts. There are sixteen well equipped spacious modern laboratories covering an area of 5814 sq.mtrs in addition to the area provided for Machine room, Drug Testing Laboratory, pilot plant, Drug Information services, and conference halls seminar halls, herbal garden& generic drug store. The institute provides a separate animal house in a spacious building for the laboratory animals as per the norms of CPCSEA.

Pharmaceutics

The Pharmaceutics laboratories for Physical Pharmacy, Dispensing & Hospital Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Technology, Cosmetic Technology, etc., are fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipments such as – Electro lab dissolution rate test apparatus, tablet compression machines, tray driers, all purpose equipment and many more to impart industry oriented skills in manufacturing of formulations.

Pharmaceutical analysis

The Pharmaceutical analysis laboratories with central instrumentation facilities for Pharmaceutical Analysis, Chemical Analysis, Electro Chemical Analysis, Chromatographic methods of Analysis, Instrumental Methods of Analysis, Advanced Instrumental Methods of Analysis, are equipped with high end instruments like Shimadzu HPLC with PDA Detector, UV Visible Spectrophotometer, Florimeter, Flame Photometer etc.,

Pharmacology

The Pharmacology laboratories for APHE, Pharmacology, Pharmacological Methods of Screening, Advanced Systemic Pharmacology, Bioassays & Screening Methods are fully equipped with all essential instruments like Actophotometer, Rotarod, Poleclimbing Apparatus, Analgesiometer, Convulsiometer, Plethsmograph, Sherrington drums with Perspex bath assembly, Centrifuge, Metabolic cages, etc.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry

The Pharmaceutical Chemistry laboratories for Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Advanced Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Inorganic Chemistry, Medicinal Biochemistry, Chemistry of Bulk Drugs, Chemistry of Natural Products are fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipments like Rotary Evaporator, Microwave Oven, Digital Melting Point Apparatus, Muffle Furnace, Reflux flask with Condenser etc.

Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry

The Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry laboratories for Phytomedicines, Chemistry of Natural Products, Herbal Drug Technology are equipped with equipments of industrial significance such as I R Moisture Balance, Digital Colony Counter, Projection Microscope, Zone Reader, Laminar Air Flow, Florimeter, Autoclave, Soxhlet Apparatus, TLC Kit, Clevenger’s Apparatus, BOD Incubator, Hot Air Oven, Micro-scopes, Binocular and Trinocular Microscopes etc.

Research Labs

The Major research projects of UGC has further strengthened the research activities at GIP in the disciplines of Pharmaceutics,Pharmaceutical chemistry, Pharmaceitucal Analysios, Phytochmeistry,Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology etc..The research laboratories are equipped with Shimadzu HPLC with PDA Detector, UV Visible Spectrophotometer, Florimeter, Flame Photometer etc., Electro lab dissolution rate test apparatus, Stability chamber, Probe sonicator, Biochemical Analyser, Millipore water purification system, Transdermal diffusion system etc.

Add on Activities

Institute is planning to start an institute based pilot plant for manufacture of pharmaceutical dosage forms other than parenterals on a R & D set up. This will provide enough opportunities for the Pharmacy graduates of GITAM University to attain hands on experience on the industrial concepts of manufacturing of dosage forms including the concept of Good Manufacturing Practices.

Institute based pilot plant will also promote the causes for an effective tie up with industry to have an Institute-Industry-Interface, so that, the industry can take up its    R & D activities with regard to development for dosage forms at the proposed pilot plant set up, making optimum use of facilities and technology. This will also help the Pharma industries to save a lot of time in addressing in house trouble shooting issues in designing and developing dosage forms.

The institute also looks forward for the support and active participation of other multinational pharmaceutical units to come forward in contributing R & D model machineries, equipments related to mini industry set up proposed at  Dr. Yellapragada Subbarao Memorial Bhawan, GITAM Institute of Pharmacy, GITAM University.  At present a concrete structure of 200 sq. mtrs has already been earmarked with a further provision to allocate the entire ground floor (2000 sq. mtrs) of the 7 storied Dr. Yellapragada Subbarao Bhawan, if need arises.

This is first of its kind for any pharmacy institution in this part of the country to have a provision for a pilot plant manufacturing unit at the institutional campus. Further GITAM Institute of Pharmacy has also prepared a road map for establishment of a Drug Information Centre with Micromedex drugdex soft ware for providing clinical support on safe use of drugs to the people at large and to the Physicians of Visakhapatnam in particular.

GIP Library:

The GIP library with OPAC and libsys facilities is having a rich collection of books of nearly 8573 hard copies, 1266 titles, 3013 e-books,62 journals,37 e-journals,163 CDs with an investment of 77,96,132.00 lakhs towards library books alone. The Central Library of the University remains open on all 363 days from  8 AM to 11 PM daily.

Knowledge Resource Centre

The Knowledge Resource Centre (Central Library), an architectural delight, named after Sir Sarvepallli Radhakrishnan is a five storied air conditioned complex with CCTV surveillance. The Bhavan has a total plinth area of 50,000 s.ft and facilities like air conditioned auditorium with a seating capacity of 200 and also annexe to host meetings for a capacity of 500. Book exhibitions, product demos, group discussions of training and placement departments and get together of students take place here.

Digital Library

The Digital Library provides free access to all research publications of GITAM faculty and scholars, subscribed e-journals of reputed publishers like IEEE, Springerlink, ACM, ASME, ASCE, EBSCO, Capitaline, etc over GITAM Intranet

Games & Sports

The institute has exclusive sports facility with about 7.5 acres of land devoted for Games and Sports. A big gymnasium providing facilities for all indoor games and sports and a fitness centre separately for boys and girls.

The Kodi Rama Murthy Indoor Stadium of international standards has been the venue for many important intercollegiate events. The synthetic and clay floodlit tennis courts of international standards are the added attraction.

Auditorium/Seminar halls/Conference halls

GITAM maintains well equipped centrally air-conditioned conference halls  like Mother Teresa auditorium, KRC auditorium, Sivaji Auditorium, Dr.B.R.Ambedkar auditorium apart from several mini conference halls like Dr.YellapargadaSubbarao conference hall and an open air auditorium  named  Balayogi Kalapranganam

Hobby Centre

GITAM conducts musical and cultural training programmes for the enthusiastic students to refresh themselves. The hobby centre is well equipped with electrical and musical instruments. Instruction in music is lessons given to the students.

The University administration puts in all efforts to help the students feel at home in terms of comforts and concern of the hostel personnel.
