GetMyUni's Verdict on IIT Delhi

  • Delhi , Delhi NCR
Compare

Despite its relatively smaller campus, IIT Delhi is celebrated as one of the nation's premier institutions, offering renowned research facilities and promising career pathways to its graduates. Being a part of IIT Delhi is a matter of great distinction.

Established in 1961 as the College of Engineering Delhi, IIT Delhi is one of the oldest institutions in the country. IIT Delhi has one of the smallest campus infrastructure among the other IITs, but it is located in the heart of the city. Being part of the elite category of institutes in the country, the academic scenario at IITD is one of the best, with a crowd of top-ranking students.

As the institutes are allocated based on the ranks in the entrance exams, students from all around India are part of the crowd, making it a culturally diverse campus. This also makes it difficult for the students as the overall competition level is high. Additionally, the curriculum is extremely demanding with multiple exams, quizzes, assignments and tests conducted almost every day.

Even though the campus infrastructure is smaller than the other institutes, there is no compromise on the academic quality provided at IIT Delhi. Certain departments, like that of the Electrical Engineering program, are regarded as the best at IITD.

Table of Contents

Well-Structured Courses

IIT Delhi offers a wide range of courses in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree levels in different disciplines. Apart from the Engineering courses, the institute is also famous for its programs in Management, Design and Applied Science fields. It is common knowledge that the education provided by the Indian Institute of Technology is top-notch, regardless of branches and courses. However, some departments are better at IITD than others.

The institute offers one of the best doctoral programs in the country, with various specialisations in different fields. Some of the branches and courses that are highly regarded at IIT Delhi are as follows.

  • Electrical Engineering (EE)
  • Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Management Studies
  • Physics
  • Mass Communication and Journalism
  • Design

Students also have the opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary subjects during their course period, which helps them learn new concepts and topics from other fields. The course fees are reasonable and affordable. The average fees for courses like Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) are INR 8,43,400 and INR 9,60,000. Whereas, for courses like Master of Design (M.Des), Master of Technology (M.Tech) and Master of Science (M.Sc), the average cost of learning ranges from INR 1,80,000 to INR 2,12,400.

Eminent Faculty Members

As it is one of the best educational institutions, the professors at IIT Delhi are highly educated and experts in their respective fields. They are dedicated to imparting knowledge to their pupils. Almost all the professors at the institute are PhD holders with immense research capacities.

The faculties ensure all the students graduating from the institute not only score high marks but also have sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge in the subjects, which can help them flourish in the industry. The institute takes special care in hiring the best of the best-qualified professionals for its faculty.

The professors of the institute include innovative and interactive teaching methods to make sure students of all learning capabilities have equal opportunities. They are easily approachable and available to students to clarify doubts. The professors also help the research students with their projects using their connections in the industry. It can be said that the faculty at IIT Delhi is one of the best the country has to offer, with experts and leaders in their fields.

Compact Yet Charming Architectural Design

One of the factors that make IIT Delhi different from the other IITs is its small infrastructure. Though modest in size, the infrastructure is beautifully designed, with all the required facilities and amenities available on campus. With various laboratories and exceptional types of equipment, the institute provides all the necessary facilities for students from all departments.

The institute has both traditional classrooms with old-fashioned facilities, as well as modern, air-conditioned classrooms with state-of-the-art features for the interactive learning environment. The central library at the institute consists of large collections of resources to enhance the educational and literary knowledge of the students. But most of the students use the library for charging their laptops or spending time with their friends.

However, the campus gets flooded during the rainy season, making it difficult for the students to commute from one place to another. Although student life at the institute is hectic with classes and exams, students have several areas in and around the campus where they can relax and hang out with their peers.

Another drawback of the institute is its food outlets. Even though the campus has several outlets on the campus, most of them serve bad-quality food and are out of stock. These stalls are open only during the college working hours, which leaves the students with no place to go at night when they are hungry. The institute also lacks facilities for group discussions and restricts the students from utilising specific areas, such as the Bio-Tech Lawn.

Besides that, the institute has several sports facilities, including grounds for different games and excellent gyms. The institute has Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the campus and designated footpaths that are well-lit during the night.

Substandard Hostel Facilities

There are 13 hostels for male and female students on the campus. In spite of being one of the top institutes, the hostels available in the institute are subpar, with outdated facilities and a lack of adequate furniture. The rooms are crammed with two or three beds, without enough space for the students to move around.

The yearly hostel fee is around INR 30,000. The hostel inmates have common washrooms, and there is no proper ventilation in the corridors. But, the students have mentioned that the memories made in the hostel are irreplaceable, with immaculate conversations and cultural diversity.

The hostel rooms are not air-conditioned, and students are not allowed to use coolers, even during hot weather. Even the single occupancy rooms are small and have to share common rooms. The hostels are not cleaned regularly, and the overall hygiene of the bathrooms is unacceptable. The electrical wiring is too old.

Another downside of staying in the institute’s hostels is its mess, which serves unhygienic food in poorly maintained dining halls. There are no other food joints available near the hostel, so the students are forced to rely on messy food most of the time.

The scenario is different from one hostel to another. Some hostels serve good food while others are not up to the mark. So, it all depends on the hostel the students are allotted by the management. For instance, the newer hostels have better facilities than the old hostels, with better quality food and mess amenities.

Though most students prefer to stay in hostels on campus, there are PG facilities available around the institute with nominal rents. But, it is recommended that the students stay in the hostels to get a complete college experience.

The institute also ensures the safety of students with the 24/7 availability of security personnel at all gates. There are certain rules regarding the curfews for the students to enter the hostel. This also assures the general discipline at the hostels.

Lively and Dynamic Campus Environment

With several fests and events happening regularly, IIT Delhi has a vibrant campus life with highly diverse student and faculty members. Though students are mainly focused on their academics, they have the space to pursue their other interests in arts and sports with several clubs and committees.

There are clubs for students who are interested in extra-curricular activities such as dance, drama, debate, music, literature, fine arts and crafts, films, photography, etc. There are other clubs for students who lean towards technology as well. These clubs are available for those interested in Aeromodelling, Robotics, Economics, Coding, Technology and Innovation, among other Tech clubs.

For those students who are interested in sports, the institute offers several facilities for different games, like football, lawn tennis, cricket, athletics and other sporting activities. In short, after being swamped with exams, assignments, practicals, projects and other academic-related commitments, students have several options to choose from for relaxing.

Diversity on Campus

The IIT campuses are famous for their cultural diversity on campus. Students and professors from different cultural backgrounds are part of the institute. Though Hindi is the widely spoken language on campus, English is also a prominent language to make it easier for students from the Southern part of India to communicate with others. The only drawback is that the gender ratio is disproportional, with most of the students being boys. There are only very few female students, and there are none in certain departments. Hence, even though the institute is culturally rich and diverse, there is a lack of diversity in gender.

Dress Code

IIT Delhi is not strict about the dress code, as there is no set uniform. Students are allowed to wear whatever they are comfortable in, like trousers, shorts, skirts, t-shirts, and so on. There are no restrictions or dress codes imposed on the students at IIT Delhi.

Guaranteed Placement Opportunities

Being part of one of the most prestigious institutes, IIT Delhi offers immense opportunities to students as companies rely on the overall quality of their students. More than 500 companies visit the institute every year, offering high salary packages and impressive career prospects to the graduates. The institute witnessed a 20% hike in placement rates in the past year, with exceptional packages offered to its students during the placement drives.

Apart from outstanding opportunities availed by the students of Engineering departments, even the MBA graduates were offered great opportunities. The highest salary package offered was INR 2 CPA, and around 50 students were offered packages of more than INR 1 CPA.

The most successful departments with regards to the placement rates are Software, Core Engineering, Technology and Analytics, and Finance fields that have acquired more than 1300 offers from globally recognised companies like Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Google, IBM, Accenture, Microsoft, and others.

The highly reputed brand name of the institute assures a fruitful career for all the students. Most of the alumni of the institute are in top positions in big companies around the world. The notable alumni members of the institute include famous personalities like Raghuram Rajan, Kiran Bedi, Chetan Bhagat, Vinod Khosla, Divya Dwivedi, Sachin Binny Bansal, and many more.

Overall Perspective of IIT Delhi

Needless to say, IIT Delhi is one of the biggest and best institutes for those who dream big and are ready to work hard to achieve their dreams. As it is difficult to get admission to the institute, only the best of the best students are part of IIT Delhi, which has the most eligible, highly qualified and experienced professors imparting top-tier knowledge.
