Founded by Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis on 17th December 1931, the ISI, Kolkata was a unique institution committed to the research, teaching, and application of Statistics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences. The institute obtained the status of an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959. The institute was established as a learned society in the Statistical Laboratory in 1931. In 1932, the institute was registered as nonprofit making learned society for the advancement of Statistics. A few years later the Institute’s achievements in research that included innovative projects on sample surveys of agricultural crops and socio-economic after-effects of the Bengal famine (1943-44) as well as path-breaking research publications of Professor R.C.Bose on experimental designs in the Annals of Eugenics (1939) bought recognition in India and abroad. The Institute is now considered as one of the foremost centers in the world for training and research in statistics and the related sciences.
The Headquarters of ISI is located in the metropolis of Kolkata. There are four centers of this institute that are located in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, and Tezpur. The primary pursuit of the institute is Research in Statistics and the Teaching affairs are managed mainly in Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore. The other institutes in India in several cities are occupied primarily in projects and consultancy in Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research.
During the 1920s, nearly all the statistical work was done in India single-handedly by Mahalanobis. The early statistical studies used to work on analyses of data on the stature of Anglo-Indians, metrological data, rainfall data, data on soil conditions, etc. The findings from these analyses were of great impact in the control of floods, development of agriculture and led to the recognition of Statistics as a key discipline. The Govt. of India allocated responsibility to the institute to prepare the draft second five-year plan with P.C. Mahalanobis as the chief architect.
The impact of Mahalanobis was so penetrating that the physics students started to find Statistics interesting. Theoretical research in Statistics began to flourish in the Institute. Research on large-scale sample surveys won Mahalanobis a Fellowship of the Royal Society.
The major aim of ISI, Kolkata was to encourage the study and circulation of knowledge of Statistics, to evolve statistical theory and methods, and use their research and practical application to the problems of planning of National Development and Social Welfare and to deal with research in various fields of natural and social sciences, with the help of the Statistics. ISI, Kolkata Admission offers several Degrees, Diplomas and Certification programs mostly in Statistics and Maths. For the admission purpose, the institute conducts several written tests, interviews or on the basis of the merit lists, etc.
