The Karnatak University of Dharwad was established in the year 1949 and is one of the oldest Universities in the state of Karnataka. It became a Statutory University on 1st March 1950. The University provides courses in the fields of Science, Commerce, Humanities, and Education and has over 50 departments. The University has excellent infrastructural facilities and is furnished with a unique green library, co-operative store, and hostel facilities.

Started in 1949 Karnatak University has expanded drastically from having a mere 34 affiliated colleges to more than 250 Affiliated colleges over a period of 60 years. As of 2019, there are 47 PG departments, 224 teachers, and 4500 students in which 47% are girls.
The University is an 'A' grade university that is accredited by NAAC. KUD is also part of the UGC-INFONET which helps to access more than 5000 electronic journals for research and advanced study. It was also awarded the coveted 'University of Potential for Excellence (UPE) by the University Grants Commission with the financial assistance of INR 50 crores for advanced study, research, and development purpose.

KUD admissions can be done online on the official website of the university and also they pay offline inside the campus in the admission department. The students must download the Application Form and the bank challan from the website or by contacting and the administration office of the University. KUD Scholarship and fees concession will be given to needy students, i.e only for those who are eligible. The candidate must remit the prescribed fees through the branch of any nationalized bank to the University account. An entrance test is conducted for all Postgraduate courses. Admission is done on the basis of the merit, 50% of the aggregate marks obtained in the relevant subjects at qualifying degree examination (all three years), and 50% of Cutoff marks obtained in the Entrance Test. For Undergraduate courses, the students are chosen on the basis of merit. The University follows Reservation policy by the Government.
KUD spreads across 888 acres of land with beautiful gardens everywhere inside the campus. There are 3 hostels for girls, 3 hostels for boys and 1 hostel for working women and also one more hostel for Social Welfare department for boys.
