Kerala Kalamandalam is India’s premier institution dedicated to preserving and promoting Kerala’s traditional performing arts. Founded in 1930 by poet Padmabhushan Vallathol Narayana Menon and Manakkulam Mukundaraja, it started as a Kathakali training center and later expanded to include various art forms. The institution moved to its current location in Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur, in 1936, and became renowned worldwide for its disciplined training under esteemed gurus. Kalamandalam is a residential institution offering training in Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Thullal, Kutiyattam, Panchavadyam, Carnatic Music, Mridangam, and more, following the traditional Gurukula system. It has become a symbol of excellence in the global cultural landscape. In 1975, Kalamandalam became a grant-in-aid educational institution, and in 1990, formal schooling was introduced alongside its performing arts programs.
