Maharaja Srischandra College: A Brief History
Established in 1941 by Maharaja Srischandra Nandy in memory of his father, Maharaja Manindra Chandra Nandy, the college is located in North Kolkata's bustling Shyambazar area. Initially set up in a repurposed charitable dispensary, the building later became shared by three institutions: Maharani Kasiswari College (Morning), Maharaja Manindra Chandra College (Day), and Maharaja Srischandra College (Night). Maharaja Srischandra College became an independent institution in 1964.
Maharaja Srischandra Nandy (1897–1952), the last zamindar of Cossimbazar, played a significant role in Bengal’s socio-cultural movements, serving as a minister in A.K. Fazlul Haque’s cabinet and contributing to the arts, literature, sports, and education.
Initially offering a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, the college expanded to include humanities subjects to meet growing student demand. Situated at 20 Ramkanto Bose Street, Kolkata, near the iconic Shyambazar five-point crossing, the college now serves a diverse student body of both men and women.
