“Prafulla Chandra College’s focus set only on academics has caused its infrastructure and placement situation to take a massive hit.”
Prafulla Chandra College is a reputable name in the education ecosystem in the state of West Bengal. The college has been standing headstrong for the past several decades. The distinct feature of a college is its class timings. Its classes are conducted in the afternoon and evening. Hence, for those working part-time jobs, either in the morning or night, it becomes easier for them to get a degree while also earning. This also caters to the college’s well-known reputation. Very few colleges in the country are left that conduct classes in the afternoon or evening.
While PCC has maintained its quality of teaching and curriculum offerings, other factors, such as placements could be a lot better for the students. They can often be heard about the paucity of placement opportunities in various departments. For a college that has been in the business for so long, it is imperative that they provide good placement opportunities.
One of the significant reasons students pursue higher studies is job opportunities. Furthermore, the student strength in each class is close to 100. Therefore, it might pose difficulty for many of the faculty members to cater to the individual needs of the students.
There is also a fact to note that since Prafulla Chandra College was established, the area has not been extended much more than its original campus. Hence, there is a cramped sense, which also affects many facilities provided by the college, such as sports and many more. Overall, though, PCC does provide many other educational facilities that satisfy the students’ needs well.

Being in the system for so long has made Prafulla Chandra College master the craft of structuring the curriculum well. The courses are designed as per the guidelines provided by the state and other governing bodies. Each subject covers several topics to provide an all-round perspective of the subjects. The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in limited fields such as Arts, Science, Commerce, etc. However, the intake of students each year is considerably large.
Admission at PCC is based on the marks obtained in the last qualifying examination. Thus, the admission process is relatively straightforward as compared to many other state colleges. Although, the same cannot be said for the semester examinations. Students have noted on various online platforms that the focus of the teachers and the management lies in the evaluation of the exam.
Thus, while they maintain a particular standard of quality for the courses, they are also meticulous in the evaluation matrix. The courses include both theory and practical aspects of the subjects with relevant examples from recent developments in the subjects. Not many professional courses have been introduced to the students yet. Most traditional courses are offered by the college.
While there is a focus on practical learning, only a few or sometimes nil industrial visits are arranged for the students. Such visits are an integral part of the student’s academic journey. It increases the depth of knowledge of the students and significantly helps in bridging the gap between the educational and professional worlds.
Prafulla Chandra College is a public or government institution. Hence, the course fees are nominal in nature. For students who are keen on getting a BA (Hons.) or B.Com (Hons.) degree, they have to pay a yearly fee of INR 5,400, while for BA (Gen.) or B.Com (Gen.) the annual fee is INR 5,050.
However, for B.Sc (Hons.), students have to pay yearly INR 6850. For PG degrees, however, students have to churn out INR 13,000 yearly on fees. The low course fees help a more significant number of students from various backgrounds gain admission to the college. They can also avail of multiple scholarships granted by the government.
The faculty members of Prafulla Chandra College are humble in their nature. While being so, they also possess a great deal of knowledge and qualifications. The teachers are of utmost patience in addressing any queries of the students and resolve them quickly. The professors also use many relevant examples from real life to help the students be aware of the topics.
However, the teachers are not exclusively known for using innovative teaching techniques that would make the lectures engaging. For this reason, more often than not, students tend to lose interest in the subject or in-class lectures.
Prafulla Chandra College is not prominent in infrastructural development. To begin with, the college has not expanded itself much area-wise since its inception. For this reason, there is a lack of space on the premises. Which, in turn, affects how the students utilise the space. The classrooms, though not spacious, seat the students comfortably. The classrooms are built in a traditional style with traditional equipment.
It undoubtedly lacks the touch of modern technology. However, it does not necessarily hamper the quality of teaching. The seats or benches are wooden and lack a bit of maintenance and comfort. The laboratories are present as per the department’s requirements. A satisfactory number of instruments are present in these laboratories. More advanced instruments can be installed or introduced in these laboratories to make good use of them.
The library houses many books, research papers, journals, magazines, etc. The library strictly operates at the prescribed times. Students cannot access the library beyond those times. This might create a problem for those needing to access the reading room at odd hours.
The sports facilities, due to lack of space, are not fully developed. It only includes playgrounds and a handful of sports. There are additional facilities like a computer lab, auditorium, canteen, etc. The canteen food is reasonably priced and has various options.
The security on the campus premises is tight, making everyone safe and secure. For students looking forward to accommodation facilities, they can find plenty of paying guest options nearby the college at various prices. Overall, there needs to be much improvement in the infrastructure. Furthermore, the current facilities should also be maintained for its proper functioning.
As mentioned earlier, Prafulla Chandra College does not have any established placement opportunities. Among the limited departments, only a few courses get to see the recruitment process.
This serves as a massive disappointment to the students who need employment opportunities once they graduate. Furthermore, there are no significant training sessions to upskill the students and increase their chances of employment. The salaries that are offered to the few students who get placed are below the industry average.
Prafulla Chandra College offers a cheerful campus life. Events are conducted throughout the year. The most awaited event is the campus fest, in which celebrities perform. Colleges from across the state participate in various activities as well. Although, among all these, not many sports activities are conducted. People can also join a few clubs and NSS.
Among the students, not much diversity can be seen apart from the fact that they come from various backgrounds. Students mainly from the city or state are admitted to the college.
PCC is not strict about rules and regulations, except for the 75% attendance record. Moreover, there is no prescribed dress code or uniform as well that the students need to abide by. Hence, it gives ample room to be comfortable in whatever they would like to wear.
There is no doubt that Prafulla Chandra College offers good education with capable faculty members. Its core focus remains on providing quality courses. For students who might be working part-time jobs in the morning or at night, PCC offers a good opportunity for studies as the classes are held in the evening. Moreover, the nominal course fees add to the benefit of students coming from marginalised backgrounds.
But for students looking to experience an all-around college life, Prafulla Chandra College might not be the right choice. There are several drawbacks to the college, such as lack of infrastructure and placement, traditional method of teaching, lack of space and sports opportunities and many more. Hence, before choosing PCC, students must compare various other colleges before zeroing in on one.
